Who owns a GeForce GTX 590 and do wants some tweaking!? - 2011/04/18 23:05 Since at the beginning some rather bad news about overclocking these GeForce GTX 590's was spread around we didn't want to start a discusion about it, and that simply to avoid you damaging your expensive cards. But as long as you take into account what these cards can draw as maximum power there is a way to tweak these, and yes we mean by modifying the BIOS's of these cards. We had already some success and perhaps some others would like to ask what is possible?

Re:Who owns a GeForce GTX 590 and do wants some tweaking!? - 2011/04/23 10:38 Mmm, I guess there aren't so many owners yet of these GeForce GTX 590's or you all find them fast enough and don't see any reason to tweak these slightly upwards. Though if you do want to be just faster than all the rest, or would like to get some extra out of yours, just backup both BIOS's and attach these on this thread and tell us what you would like to get changed. I do hope to see some coming soon.

Re:Who owns a GeForce GTX 590 and do wants some tweaking!? - 2011/04/25 20:42 The highest stable overclock I reached was 830/3456MHz on water at 1.0505V core voltage setting. The only benchmark that actually shows the boost in performance is Unigine Heaven. The best overclock that I can recommend for all applications and 3DMark benchmarks due to the very aggressive overclock protection is 725/3456MHz on air at 0.9630V. Although some users report that unstable, so 0.9755V which is the next increment would be better.

Thanks for the update and feedback, that is good to know what this card can do on default air cooling or when you go for some water cooling solution. The better the cooling, the higher you can overclock though with the GeForce GTX 590 you also need to take into account the voltage that is drawn by the graphics card in total. Nice overclocks you gotten there.

Re:Who owns a GeForce GTX 590 and do wants some tweaking!? - 2011/05/23 23:23 I got two EVGA GeForce GTX 590's within the so called classified package. That means four GPU's which seem to run on different voltages from stock setting. When I look at the first card, one GPU works at 0.938V while the other at only 0.925V. Then I check the second card and there both GPU's work at 0.912V setting. I'm trying to squeeze a bit more out of these graphics cards and started some overclocking. Without changing the voltages, the highest I can go without crashing on Unigine Heaven or 3DMark benchmarks is 650MHz with stock memory.

Seems to me that the voltage on card two is not enough since during Battlefield Bad Company 2 I sometimes get stuters. I tried to flash the BIOS's from one card to the other, but that didn't change the voltages. Using ForceWare 267.85 drivers I got the voltages up to 0.950V using the E-Leet tunings software. I tried Afterburner but the voltage tab is locked and bumped the clocks to 678/3700MHz. The performance gain was great. My Unigine Heaven score went from 2105 to about 2950 smooth and without a crash, but those drivers are not ready for prime time.

I would like to use the latest ForceWare 270.61 drivers and tweak the voltages up a bit. Currently my GPU temps with air cooloing are about 40°C idle and 70°C load with stock voltage. At 0.950V the temps are around 50°C idle and 80°C under load. It would be great if I can get clock speeds of 678/3700MHz with a slight voltage increase on the second card like maybe 0.925V or 0.938V at the most. If someone can help it will be much appreciated and I will post the results.

Re:Who owns a GeForce GTX 590 and do wants some tweaking!? - 2011/05/24 00:07 Before we go into the tweaking, first some things which you need to know about the Fermi series which is different from all previous GeForce graphics cards. The Fermi technology is using domains and that means that these cards no longer operate at a specific voltage but a voltage range, which is why each GPU will draw a different voltage according to its needs and what is also the quality of the graphics chipset itself. So it is normal that each GPU of our quad SLI setup is operating at a different voltage and that isn't an issue either. This is simply some new way of working and offers some great flexibility.

Secondly, we have checked the original BIOS's you have provided if the two GeForce GTX 590 cards and they are identical between both cards and that means flashing either way won't make any difference. But we can change the voltage domain which is set by a mininum and maximum voltage value wherein the GPU can operate. If we increase the minimum value the operating voltage will automatically go up. Now the BIOS has the voltage set at 0.9130V as minimum and 0.9630V as maximum value. Give us a minute to tweak your BIOS's according to your message.

Re:Who owns a GeForce GTX 590 and do wants some tweaking!? - 2011/05/24 00:19 Okay, if you can follow our advice and just try the flashing with only one card in your system? This is to be save and to make sure the card works fine with the tweaked BIOS's, meaning that you will need to run some benchmarks etc to be sure. We increased the voltage slightly and set the clock as you requested. If the first cards works fine, you remove it and you do the same with only the second one.

If that one also works fine, you put them again together and enable the SLI mode. Again the original BIOS's were identical between both cards but not between the two GPU's per GeForce GTX 590 which is normal for dual GPU based graphics card, as one acts always as the master.

Re:Who owns a GeForce GTX 590 and do wants some tweaking!? - 2011/05/24 04:41 Thanks for the update and I have tried these but the voltage is still different between the four GPU's while I wanted to have these all working at the same voltage value.

Re:Who owns a GeForce GTX 590 and do wants some tweaking!? - 2011/05/24 08:50 Can you first try the tweaked BIOS's that I have provided as those follow the NVIDIA logic on how to increase the voltage domain aligning the increase of the minimum and maximum value in a similar manner? This change we have done a lot and we first want to be sure your cards work with this before we can tweak the maximum value of the voltage domain down a little. The max value will normally not be used unless a GPU is of lesser quality and needs that increase to keep working at the clock speeds that have been set. Once you confirm both cards work fine with this set of tweaked BIOS's we will tune down the max value of the voltage domain.

Re:Who owns a GeForce GTX 590 and do wants some tweaking!? - 2011/05/24 09:20 So I tried it out and the performance gain is very minimal. In Unigine Heaven at extreme settings, at stock I was getting 2140 and with the updated BIOS's I now
