Palit Sonic 460 :extreme undervolt - 2011/04/02 21:36 Hi guys, I'm trying to undervolting (and downclocking accordingly) a Palit 460 sonic 1024 vga . With MSI-Afterburner/Kombustor the card seems stable with 0.825v @650/1700 under stress. Now if possible I want make changes effective with a bios mod, and possibly insert even lower voltages.
As i said I'd like set voltages lower than 0.825v. but I found googling this post referred to a 470gtx:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...3&postcount=44
with this part:
"EDIT: updated image, cause VID <0.825 is not possible due to VID7 pin on NCP5388, is grounded"
Although is referred to a 470gtx card, I'm not an expert so I'd like to ask you if this apply to the 460 gtx, or I can set voltages lower than 0.825v.

Nibitor 6.0 allows me to set value as low as 0.6125, but how much can i really go down?
My ideal would be to set 0.725v for 2d and 0.775 for 3d (and further lowering frequencies) but i have no idea if the card may work with these voltages (regardless of the fact that will be stable with certain frequencies)

Re:Palit Sonic 460 :extreme undervolt - 2011/04/03 10:43 Mmm, you won't be able to go that low really at least not for the 3D operation cause it will need that 0.825V to run the 650MHz core clock speed. We have seen this undervolting before but the lowest was around 0.825V really cause below that the card wouldn't work fine anymore. But I can't recall which card it was of the GeForce GTX 4x0 series. Now we could always try though the BIOS tweaking by going step by step lower.

Re:Palit Sonic 460 :extreme undervolt - 2011/04/03 13:40 Yeah I imagined that i couldn't go lower with 650mhz . I intend to further decrease the frequencies. I just wanted to know, if I select voltages lower than 0.825v will be become really effective ( mean the vga will really get only 0.775v if I put this in the bios?) once the bios is flashed or not.

Re:Palit Sonic 460 :extreme undervolt - 2011/04/03 22:39 Well it has been some time ago that we had checked this oput the first time and normally you can go lower but it won't be able to run at 650MHz, but normally it can run at lower speeds. So before any flashing would be done, first you should see if with a BIOS tweak all works fine at 0.825V. If you want we can make the tweak but you need to provide the original BIOS of your card on how you want it set per operating mode.

Re:Palit Sonic 460 :extreme undervolt - 2011/04/04 22:01 Can you please set then the vga bios this way:
-2d : 50gpu/100shaders/135mem with 0.725v
multimonitr/low 3d : 250gpu/500shaders/324mem with 0.725v
3d :600gpu/1200shaders/1600mem with 0.775v

I attached the original bios of my vga

Re:Palit Sonic 460 :extreme undervolt - 2011/04/04 22:15 Okay, well to start I have left the 2D and low power 3D operating modes from a core clock speed untouched as we know that lowering those can give issues and we don't change everything at once as that will make it very hard to find what the issue it that didn't work. But we lowered the voltage according to your request to 0.725V except for the 3D operation, just know you are flashing at your own risk.

Re:Palit Sonic 460 :extreme undervolt - 2011/04/05 21:41 Just wondering if you did check and actually already tried the BIOS that we have provided? Not to really push, as this is up to you to validate of taking the risk of flashing, though we think it should work since we also lower the core clock to only 600MHz. Let us know, or if you have additional questions?

Re:Palit Sonic 460 :extreme undervolt - 2011/04/08 12:01 Hi sorry for not replying.
I'm having a problem to make a USB bootable stick to use to flash teh bios.
I'm waiting tomorrow when I'll have more time to look into it.

Re:Palit Sonic 460 :extreme undervolt - 2011/04/08 22:42 Here is a great prog for making USB boot
Just unpack it run the format usb exe
first shuse the usb devise in the first drop down list marked device
then in the secon dropdown list shuse fat32 its marked File system
then go to format options tick in qick format and Create a Dos bootable disc
then click on Browse and go to the folder boot98se then click start .
When done congrats you have a boot usb

The Boot98se folder is in the same folder as usb_format
