Re:GeForce GTX 280 been listed as GeForce GTX 295 strangely!? - 2010/12/30 19:35Okay, I wanted to flash because my brother upgraded his GPU and gave me a GeForce GTX 280 with BIOS version 62.00.0E.00.00 and they have different speeds but they are the same card. Therefore I thought flash to them to same BIOS or to the newest. I can look into the cost of sending the card, the least I can do for all your help. But where are you located? And I will see the cost if it is not much, I will send it.

Re:GeForce GTX 280 been listed as GeForce GTX 295 strangely!? - 2010/12/30 20:01If it is the same brand the newer BIOS should work, just one thing as you say they ave different speeds make sure your card can handle the other speeds first via software tweaking. And you can flash to match them, but always make sure you save first the original BIOS. Normally if they differently clocked and being the same card, it means one is pre-overclocked and will be known with an extra suffix. I am from Belgium, so perhaps costs for shipping might be too high.

Re:GeForce GTX 280 been listed as GeForce GTX 295 strangely!? - 2011/01/16 09:29Hi, I have been busy with work little time for computer but it doesn't cost a lot so if you like I can send you the card? The post told me it will be around 13 euros. If you still want, message me the address and the card is yours. Would be great if you posted it back here what you find.

Re:GeForce GTX 280 been listed as GeForce GTX 295 strangely!? - 2011/01/17 20:02No worries mate, and thanks for checking and the offer. I have sent you a private message via the forums, and we can see going from there what and how. Yeah, I know of being busy with work as I also have that, but that brings food on the table. The website is just for fun, but I like to be professional.

Re:GeForce GTX 280 been listed as GeForce GTX 295 strangely!? - 2011/07/11 22:45I can add some info to this mystery since I modify GeForce GTX 285 cards into Mac ones. To do so, I have to remove the 128K eeproms and replace them with 256K eeproms. Before these re-chipped cards are flashed, they will identify as 05E0, which is a GeForce GTX 295. So, when the eeprom is blank, the card will be seen as GeForce GTX 295, it is by addition of softstraps that the ID gets set.
This also applies to the GeForce GTX 260 and GeForce GTX 275, they are all the same card in effect with ID set by softstraps. If you look at the posted screenshot, subsystem ID fields are 0000 when they should have a number. So either blank or with a bad BIOS file here. When the cards are blank, those 2 fields come up as an FFFF value.

Okay, that is good to know which is a bit different from what we have seen as experience when the tweezer works and turns the firmware chip in its virgin state, but of course is flashed immediatemy afterwards. Since you mention the softstraps, and I have a pending action to lookup would you know how to use the softstraps to change these during flashing? Would be great if you can share, cause my days are so busy that I didn't get time to check this out with the information I once put together. Thanks in advance.

Re:GeForce GTX 280 been listed as GeForce GTX 295 strangely!? - 2011/07/13 21:41I'm actually the guy who wrote you a few emails about these softstraps a year ago or so.
They use some funky math that we have never completely figured out.
If you use the GT200 cards as an example, they all carry the device id of 05e0 when they have a blank ROM. This is coincidentally the id for a GTX295.
The softstraps basically can add or subtract from that id. And they seem to checksum themselves, that is you move a value down at one spot, and another value goes up in another.
A friend of mine worked out how to mod G92 roms to be either 9800GT or 8800GT using this same trick. His work so I can't specify exactly what he found but basically same deal.
I know for a fact that the two examples above work. Someone with more ability to "see" how these things work may be able to find how this works.
It is vitally important that if you are trying to do this, that before EVERY flash you use "--eraseeeprom" in NVFlash. Otherwise it tries to "help" you by transferring straps and even some RAM specs over.(Calls them "board settings")
