Lowest voltage for GeForce 9600 GSO, could you give advice!? - 2010/03/04 07:58 Hi guys, well I just got this outdated GeForce 9600 GSO graphics card with 256MB memory and the default setting is 550/1300MHz with the shaders at 1375MHz which is quite low. However the heat it generates was big and I guess turning up the fan speed won't help cooling it efficiently. So what about lowering the voltage? Now I presume the BIOS default voltage is 1.00V more or less and I want to know if it can be reduced under 0.90V because I did never try this voltage before. Has anyone ever run stable at this voltage with the GeForce 9600 GSO, so is it possible? By the way, is it crucial that ForceWare drivers are uninstalled before flashing the BIOS? Anyway any advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re:Lowest voltage for GeForce 9600 GSO, could you give advice!? - 2010/03/04 09:23 Okay, well we should be able to help though I never start anything unless I know which graphics card we are really talking about as there are so many versions out there and they might have difference in what they can do. So what is the manufacturer and is it the standard version? Once we know that we can check out what is feasible.

Re:Lowest voltage for GeForce 9600 GSO, could you give advice!? - 2010/03/04 13:20 The manufacturer does it matter? Sorry, I really can't tell but with only 256MB memory, I guess it was quite old and was produced by some unfamous brand. All the imformation I got is from GPU-Z, like bus width 128-bit, release day, 65nm, etc. I thought many versions of GeForce 9600 GSO could generate lots of heat which means requiring relatively high voltage. So it seems quite common as long as you got the G92 core in it? So Depending on it perhaps you could evaluate an approximate lowest voltage needed for the GeForce 9600 GSO.

Re:Lowest voltage for GeForce 9600 GSO, could you give advice!? - 2010/03/04 20:38 Yes it does matter, and you can always tell cause it should be mentioned on the box or even on the card itself. And the details you can see with GPU-Z are just as all GeForce 9600 GSO cards and that is just not enough. If you don't want to tell, I am just wondering why cause it can't really do much to anyone except that we do know that not all manufacturers are the same. But we will check the BIOS and see, but don't just commonly assume all G92 get hot, as that isn't so. Most don't really get hot unless they come with bad cooler...

Re:Lowest voltage for GeForce 9600 GSO, could you give advice!? - 2010/03/04 20:53 Well, we checked the BIOS and we can see at what voltage it runs default as it is reporting as blank, through the voltage table does offer as lowest voltage 0.95V that can be set. If you want to try that I would first suggest to bring the heat down, to verify the cooler. First to clean it and apply new thermal paste, a very thin layer just like a piece of paper and refit the cooler. Most of the time that is the biggest issue for cards with heat issues. And afterwards you could try with setting the Extra voltage to 0.95V but then also lower the core clock speed first to 450MHz and try through software if the card can run at 500MHz and afterwards at 550MHz at this voltage, cause that is not certain.

Re:Lowest voltage for GeForce 9600 GSO, could you give advice!? - 2010/03/05 04:23 Thanks a lot, I will try it .One more question is it necessary that the ForeWare drivers should be uninstalled before I change the voltage through flashing the BIOS? Does the driver really affect the card's voltage?

Re:Lowest voltage for GeForce 9600 GSO, could you give advice!? - 2010/03/05 08:53 You only have to uninstall the ForceWare drivers when you flash an entirely new BIOS to your graphics card, so not when you just modify some parameters related to clock speeds and voltage of your own original BIOS and flash that back to your graphics card.
