BFG GeForce 8600 GT and GTS cards in SLI config possible? - 2010/02/13 19:41 Was reading that GeForce 8800 GT and GTS running in SLI config was possible by flashing the BIOS for one to both on these forums and was wondering if the same would apply with the GeForce 8600 series. Could I just flash BIOS on the GeForce 8600 GT to a GTS version or vice versa? Ordered the GT edition by mistake, well actually it was miss represented on eBay but is new so I would rather give it a try if possible. If it is and its not to much trouble could someone explain the proper procedures to take. Many thanks in advance.

That should be feasible but before you try anything can you first of all via software overclock the GeForce 8600 GT to see what it can take? We need to make sue how high the GT edition can be overclocked with the default BIOS before we can match em up to go for an SLI solution. If I understood correctly both cards are from BFG, and what we also would like are the original BIOS of both cards so we can check these out before you try any flashing.

I saved the BIOS for the GeForce 8600 GTS. Will have the GT one as soon as possible and thanks ahead of time again for any help you can offer. Will wait and post both of them in a day or so. I opened this post not knowing people would help so fast.

Okay, we will be looking forward to what you will share with us, so we can check what is feasible. Normally it should be okay, but it all depends a bit on the GT itself if it is good enough to work as a standard GTS. But both come with the same graphics chipset, so there is a good chance and that way you would be able to run both as a GTS in SLI mode.

I am waiting on your directions prior to trying anything although working on overclock speeds and will report back once it get all the numbers down. Looks like around 600MHz for core so far but haven't messed with shaders or memory yet.

So we will check these BIOS's out and the only thing you need to do is see if that GeForce 8600 GT can be overclocked well. What are looking to get from you is the maximum overclocking you can get by just using software and overclock the core and memory, and leave the shaders combined with the core when you overclock. That way we know that the core together with the shaders can go up to a certain clock speed.

Re:BFG GeForce 8600 GT and GTS cards on SLI config possible? - 2010/02/24 22:20 Having checked both BIOS's in detail, I am not so sure it will be doable and this due to some reasons. First the memory is a huge difference between both and we will never get the GeForce 8600 GT that high as its memory chips are lower spec'd. Secondly on the voltage levels we will also run into troubles as those don't match at all, and will certainly give as not much to play with. How do both cards look physically, are they from a PCB and layout perspective similar?

Re:BFG GeForce 8600 GT and GTS cards on SLI config possible? - 2010/02/25 01:01 Well nope, both cards have a different PCB layout and the GeForce 8600 GT is also smaller in size. The GTS have one extra connection which is for the power inlet, which I don't find back on the GT version. And of course the GT has a smaller cooler and fan, so cool down the graphics card.
