GeForce 8800 GT overclock failure, tough to reach any higher? - 2010/02/02 21:34 Just tried to overclock my GeForce 8800 GT from ASUS again from 650MHz to 700MHz core clock speed and also from 1624MHz to 1750MHz for the shaders, and left the memory at 1900MHz. On first boot everything seems fine, temps were 40°C idle and 60°C under load. After second reboot my mainboard, being an ASUS P5K Premium reported an overclock failure even though I didn't overclock anything else. Could it be the overclocking of the GeForce 8800 GT causing this? Should I have upped the voltage on the graphics card? Thanks in advance.

How did you overclock the card, using software or by flashing the BIOS? Cause as I always said, first you need to see how far you can overclock the graphics card using software before trying any BIOS flashing. So what software did you use, so we can follow what you tried? Normally for just a 50MHz increase you won't need a voltage increase, but you never know.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT overclock failure, tough to reach any higher? - 2010/02/02 23:17 I have never used any software, took it to 650/1900MHz with 1624MHz shaders out of the box with NiBiTor, and flashing with nvFlash about 18 months ago. The stock was 600/1800MHz and
did the same again this time but with high values. It's back to 650/1900MHz now. I will have to do some software testing then, with RivaTuner and ATITool? Could this overclock cause my mainboard to report the overclock failure?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT overclock failure, tough to reach any higher? - 2010/02/03 14:29 The best way to find out first of all how good a particular graphics card is, is by using software for the overclocking. So you should do that first, using whatever software. I am using standard RivaTuner and PowerStrip to see how high I can overclock a certain card. About the question about the mainboard, I don't know but since you have both from ASUS it could well be that the mainboard can report that as they work somehow together.

And indeed, yesterday evening I must have been sleeping cause I thought the 650MHz was the default but for the GeForce 8800 GT is only running at 600MHz. Then of course reaching 700MHz isn't a given but you should be able normally though it might indeed require a bump in the core voltage. This can only be done through NiBiTor and not by software, but it is always good to know how far a card can go through software overclocking as a base point.
