GeForce 8800 GTX and issue with running in SLI config mode? - 2010/01/22 00:07 Hi, just joined and been browsing the internet to try and find a solution. The problem is that I have been getting crashes in SLI mode with most games and was not really seeing any difference in frame rates. The cards are ASUS and NVIDIA branded but have same clock and memory speeds. My motherboard is an ASUS P5N-E SLI version which says in SLI that the two PCI Express slots will run at x8 for both cards, however the ASUS runs at x8 and the NVIDIA card only at x4 operating mode.

I have found that the cards have a different BIOS. Would second card go to x8 if I flashed it with the same BIOS? Have been trying to flash the BIOS but having a nightmare as Windows Vista will not boot from my USB sticks. Changed to boot from removable but no joy. I have attached BIOS from the ASUS card I wish to flash the other graphics card with.

Thanks for joining our forums, and we have seen such behavior previously and for others it was resolved when both cards became actually identifical. Indeed you have two the same cards, but they are not fully the same as the BIOS if different though we should best check which BIOS is best, so can you also provide the NVIDIA one so we can verify and advice.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTX and issue with running in SLI config mode? - 2010/01/22 19:29 Having checked both BIOS's, it is confirmed that the ASUS version is the newest one and as such it would be best to flash that one to the NVIDIA card and to see if that will work, and after that to reinstall the drivers to make sure it is getting recognized again.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTX and issue with running in SLI config mode? - 2010/01/22 20:17 I might have to try and boot from a CD as Windws Vista will not boot with bootable USB stick. How do I make a CD with bootable image and nvFlash on it to boot up in DOS? And what commands should I put for it to flash second card?

Re:GeForce 8800 GTX and issue with running in SLI config mode? - 2010/01/22 20:55 Well mate, that is not Windows Vista that controls what your computer is capable of booting but entirely and only your mainboard. Cause when you boot the mainboard BIOS will instruct from what it has to boot and if you selected to boot from a removable media it should just do that if your bootable media is correctly created and fully bootable. The command to flash the second card should be done with the index, so you better first check which is which through the listing command.

nvFlash v5.xx Commands...
"nvflash -list" (Provide Listing of Graphics Devices)

Re:GeForce 8800 GTX and issue with running in SLI config mode? - 2010/01/22 21:25 I think I may have to put up with it as I think my mainboard is on its way out as I have had problems before with second hard drive. My mainboard has trouble recognising two drives. Also I took the second card out and put it back in to see if it would change to x8 but I had to reboot a few times as the computer wouldn't recognise my drive, thinking of taking a hammer to it. I have tried two USB sticks and tried making one bootable from Windows Vista image and tried making one from HP formatting tool. When changing BIOS to boot from removable I just get disk boot failure. Sorry for all this hassle.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTX and issue with running in SLI config mode? - 2010/01/22 21:39 Never use Windows Vista as source to create a bootable DOS media which is what you need for nvFlash to work. I always use Windows XP or older as source and that utility you used is exactly what I have used and it works perfectly. Most likely you have some kind of issue with your mainboard so have you tried updating it to the latest BIOS for it?

Re:GeForce 8800 GTX and issue with running in SLI config mode? - 2010/01/22 23:04 Hi, rolled back to earlier BIOS and managed to flash second card to same BIOS and just checked with GPU-Z to confirm both have same BIOS. Although the ASUS is still at x8 and the other is still at x4. Checked the mainboard website to confirm that the x16 slots should be running at x8 in SLI config. Is there anything else that would have the card running at x4?

Re:GeForce 8800 GTX and issue with running in SLI config mode? - 2010/01/23 10:45 There is nothing else and actually it is almost never the graphics card that is the bad guy, but almost each time the mainboard. Now in the end the x4 setting for the NVIDIA card isn't what is going to cause the issues but rather that both BIOS's didn't match. So see what it does now in games now that both card are the same, and also try to switch the cards.
