GeForce 8600 GT plugged cable and got checkerboard image? - 2009/12/21 01:38 I have a GeForce 8600 GT and Windows 7. I bought a S-video to RCA adapter so I could play my games on an 21inch economic TV. So, I switched on the computer but when I connected the cable to the card and to the TV, my entire desktop was fill with a checkerboard pattern. I disconnected the cable, but the pattern didn't disappear. I ran some games, everyone runs fine but have that checkerboard too.

I tried removing the card, uninstalling the drivers, installing older versions, resetting the BIOS, but it did nothing. Switching to 16-bit color mode fixed the problem at the desktop, but it didn't in the games. I simply don't understand how plug this cable can bring this problem. I mean, if you say to me that you hit the card somehow, or you touched it while having static in your hands, it's okay, but plug a cable, I don't get it.

I know that games run fine, but I'm really convinced that it did some damage to the card, somehow. I don't find another explanation. I don't know what to do now, I'm now using my onboard video card, a GeForce 6150 but of course it is nothing compared to the GeForce 8600. I want to find a solution before having to buy another card, because I still don't understand how a simple cable can do some damage to my card. Thanks in advance!

Vert strange indeed, cause by just applying a different cable that should not have done anything, unless you screwed up some pins within the connector? This kind of image reminds of whenI had a GeForce 8800 GT and the DVI cable that I used had some bad contacts and by moving it a bit left and right I gotten such checkerboard image or a perfect image. In the end I just went to buy a new DVI cable. Now you say that when you put it back as it was before you still have this? I would try that GeForce 8600 GT in a friends computer to see if hat makes any difference.

Re:GeForce 8600 GT plugged cable and got checkerboard image? - 2009/12/21 17:57 Yes, I thought that too but I didn't do it because I'm afraid of doing something to my brother's computer. It's not a meaningless fear, I know that it's technically impossible, but you know I plugged a cable and it screwed up everything. Maybe I plug the card into another computer and when I put the other card, it willl have the same problem. I'll try it, anyway. And I'm not sure if I screwed up some pins, because a lot of people has this exact problem. So either the card came bad from factory, or it's another thing. As soon as I test it and I will update you.

Okay, and I would try it cause if it is really something with the card and the connection towards it, you will have the same result on another computer. So yeah, it could always be it came bad from factory but you only noticed it now, which is really a pitty. See and try, and let us know.

Re:GeForce 8600 GT plugged cable and got checkerboard image? - 2009/12/23 02:09 Oh well, sometimes you can't trust your own brother., I can't test it in another computer, but I did find something. Using RivaTuner and a modified driver I was able to use a NVStrap driver. And apparently I disabled half the shader pipelines, though I don't know what are those since I don't understand much of graphics terms. The thing is that now everything works well. Long before I was able to run GTA4 in medium quality with average frames, now I have to run it on low.

Do you know exactly what I did? And how did the disabling of this thing fix the problem? Also, if you read that thread, you will find that someone fixed the problem by switching the card to another PCI Express port. The two solutions are so different that makes me confuse more and more about the original cause of the problem, thing that I'm trying to find out since the beginning...

Well that is one way to go but that doesn't bring us any closer to the solution cuse now you simply turned your GeForce 8600 GT into half that card which would correspond to a GeForce 8400 series. You just disabled half of the processing capabilities of your graphics card which solves maybe the issue bu it doesn't proof what is wrong cause now the card is needing less power and so on.

Look you crippled your card by now only having half the chip available for processing gaming content so it is very normal you need to run it on low. Though I have to say this and I will say it very strong, if you can't follow our advice than why are you asking our help? If you can't do what we ask from you, why should we bother and trying to find out how we can resolve the issue?

Re:GeForce 8600 GT plugged cable and got checkerboard image? - 2009/12/23 21:51 Well, I know you are right, but nobody said that this is the solution. You already said it and nobody said that I'm going to stay with this temporary solution. The problem is still there, I know that and that's because I'm seeking help. What I did was just to play some games a run programs that I couldn't play and run with the onboard chip. Sorry if I offended you, I really appreciate what you do, all the patience you have, but it was just a comment to see if it give you some highlight in the cause of the problem. I will try again and see if I can test it in another computer...

It is a solution that is true but not really surprising that someone would just cripple their own graphics card without actually know if it is the card that is the issue or rather the combination with your system. And as long as that is not known, I don't find that really a solution, that is a workaround to keep you going untill you would buy a new graphics card. You can't come with a solution as long as you are not certain what or who is the cause of the problem.

Re:GeForce 8600 GT plugged cable and got checkerboard image? - 2009/12/23 22:30 Hehe, well English isn't my native language you didn't notice it? And is a bit difficult to find the exact word for every situation. So yes, that is what I meant, just a workaround for the moment to keep me going. I will insist with my brother on it. And sorry for the misunderstanding.

Re:GeForce 8600 GT plugged cable and got checkerboard image? - 2009/12/31 22:10 Hmm, it did work perfectly in another computer. I couldn't check differences in perfomance in games, cause the CPU's are very different. But well, this means that the problem is with my computer. Oh, I nearly forgot it, happy new year!
