GeForce 8800 GT fan speed and trying to tune down its noise? - 2009/12/17 20:51Hey guys, I have got this crappy GeForce 8800 GT which is a bit noisy and I would like to lower the fan speed. Yeah, I know this is the opposite of most guys, but I hate the noise when the card's idle. I have got excellent idle temps of 48°C and load temps of 72°C. I don't care about noise when gaming, but I wouldd like the card to be quiet when idle.
I have done some research and I have found some guides and stuff, but now I have a problem. When I go to the fan speed IC options I can only choose the dynamic speed option and when I choose it, I can only change Tcrit, Thyst, Thigh, Toperating and Tlow. I can't change the minimum duty cycle or Tmin, which I believe are the ones I want to change.

Well sorry but that screenshot you added I removed as it is useless just like that. You will have to attach on this thread the original BIOS of your GeForce 8800 GT and also tell us which brand and version you have, as well as how many memory it is equipped with. WHen we have the original BIOS, we can take a look and see what is feasible.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT fan speed and trying to tune down its noise? - 2009/12/17 22:27I don't get what you said. Sorry, I'm new and haven't done anything like this before. So yeah, I don't have much experience. It's a GeForce 8800 GT made by Galaxy which has 512MB and a G92 chip. It has a dual slot cooler and I don't know how to get my BIOS. Oh, the BIOS version is 62.92.16.00.05 and I used some feature in GPU-Z and maybe that's what you are looking for?

Yes indeed that is what we are looking for, thanks for sharing the original BIOS with us so we can check it. And well the main part that you had wrong is hat when you check the fan speed is that your BIOS has nothing selected as method of fan speed control. And that makes a huge difference since the only option that is available is to activate the dynamic method offering only a limited choice. To actually change that some manual editing is required. So give some time to look into this.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT fan speed and trying to tune down its noise? - 2009/12/19 12:40Having checked it further, this would seem that the fan speed might be different due to your version having a dual slot cooling solution. The standard version from Galaxy came as all GeForce 8800 GT with a single slot reference cooler and allowed the basic fan control. However if a different cooling is used it does happen that the fan control as designed initially won't work anymore. Now I did run a comparison to the other Galaxy BIOS's and I would think that Rev.04 is the same as yours but has the full fan control enabled. Try and see if that makes a difference after flashing that BIOS onto your graphics card.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT fan speed and trying to tune down its noise? - 2009/12/20 13:50Sounds great, but I haven't tried this so is there any danger in flashing this BIOS. I know that everything I do has a risk, but is there any chance that the Rev.04 BIOS isn't compatible with my graphics card?

Well, sorry if that might sound blunt, but if we advice something it is always taken into account that we believe it will work and that the risk is minimal, if else we don't give such feedback. Yeah, we check in depth first and don't just say try this or that without having done a review first. The Rev.04 is actually 99% the same as yours, since we did a full hex compare and the only difference is with the fan speed settings. Of course there is always a risk when flashing, but the BIOS won't be such an problem in this instance.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT fan speed and trying to tune down its noise? - 2009/12/20 16:55I got this shitty program from Galaxy's site, Xtreme Tuner and it has a BIOS flashing option. I was wondering if this can be used, as it seems easier than the usual flashing methods...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT fan speed and trying to tune down its noise? - 2009/12/20 17:40Well you can use that but as we have mentioned so many times, flashing from within Windows is just asking for trouble. Just do as we all do, and use a bootable DOS media and nvFlash to get that done. And there is enough threads about flashing to get you started!

Re:GeForce 8800 GT fan speed and trying to tune down its noise? - 2009/12/21 16:31Can I change the temp settings in the new BIOS? Is there anything I have to know? What's Thigh, Toperating and Trange slope? And what should I use for making the system boot on my USB stick?
