Crucial Radeon X1900 XTX but facing PC issues after cleaning? - 2009/11/10 02:56 Hello, I have a Dell Dimension 8400 with a Crucial Radeon X1900 XTX graphics card. It was overheating a lot even with the cards fan set to max with an idle temp of +75°C with even higher in game temps. I decided to give the card a cleaning, I took off the fan and used a can of compressed air to dust it out, put back on the fan, put back in the card and I got errors. First the PC started with memory errors which I fixed by reseating the memory after which no more beeps came up and resumed as normal.

My diagnostic lights show amber which the manual says this combination is another error has occured, and to check connections to hard drives, CD, DVD, etc. The monitor shows a black screen with white writing the identification of the graphics card. I have triple checked memory, hard drives and cables. I have reseated the video card several times. Other detail, there is no smoke, funny smell or other noises. The PC just hangs at that screen of the graphics card.

On the card as soon as I turn on the system I see two red lights near the socket to plug in the power for the card, they flash red once. I don't know if that means anything special. Is a flash required, though I did no previous flashing. I have been looking for a BIOS for a Crucial version but I couldn't find one. If someone can direct me to one just incase I need it. Will another BIOS's work from another manufacturer? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re:Crucial Radeon X1900 XTX but facing PC issues after cleaning? - 2009/11/10 19:27 Before we check it further I just want to be sure what you have done exactly. So you took the cooling solution off the graphics card andyou cleaned the cooler, fan, etc? Now after all was cleaned did you reapply new thermal paste before reseating the cooling solution? And did you mount it correctly? Cause the cooling is very essential for this Radeon X1900 graphics card, since these do get very hot even with a very good operating fan, etc.

Re:Crucial Radeon X1900 XTX but facing PC issues after cleaning? - 2009/11/10 20:36 Thanks for cleaning up my post. I did that one on my mobile so it was all over the place. I removed the fan dusted that out, removed the plastic like cover and used the duster on the fan and on the heatsink plate to get the dust out from the ridges. I did not reapply any thermal paste, I suppose I will try to get some just to make sure. After hours of reading last night I got tired at staring at this screen so I decided to fully clean the computer and I started reassembling piece by piece. At first nothing came up no beeps, no lights.

I reseated those pieces again and low an behold I didn't get the graphics card message, instead I actually got the system BIOS, which was great. I put all the other parts back in one at a time checking to make sure I was still getting the BIOS and now the PC is up and running. The graphics card idle temp was down drastically from 75°C before cleaning to now 44°C after cleaning. I ran Call of Duty 4 to test it out, played for about 20 minutes and the temp was only hitting 72°C which is great I think. Thanks for the help that you have provided.

Re:Crucial Radeon X1900 XTX but facing PC issues after cleaning? - 2009/11/11 11:33 Excellent stuff mate, and indeed if you are having troubles with dust you should realy clean up the full system and parts. Once done you need to rebuild the system from scratch and do it piece by piece to see all is working fine and you can find the part giving you all the troubles. Generally I clean my system regularly from dust as that is the main reason why your system will loose performance and heat up.
