Which operating system could work with Aspire One netbook? - 2009/06/09 15:41 Just wondering as I have been using Windows 7 and well I think it could be better so I was wondering if some users who have an Aspire One netbook that do run something different? I have been searching around and well it seems Linux would be a solution or even Mac OS X for that same reason? Now the netbook is mainly to be available so internet and mail are essential on it. If you can share your ideas that would be greatly appreciated.

Re:Which operating system could work with Aspire One netbook? - 2009/06/09 22:31 Indeed normally you could opt for Linux and for that Intel is somehow behind Moblin, which is designed for netbooks and as such should be very good for the Atom processors. And it is free so you can just download and try it out. I would also point to some bootmanager so that you can multiple operating systems on yoru netbook and get the best of both worlds.

Re:Which operating system could work with Aspire One netbook? - 2009/06/10 08:54 Thanks for the information, and that is indeed what I was thinking about to somehow setup the Aspire One netbook with some operating systems, or at least one Windows and one other so that I could choose which I need at what time. Most of the time it is mainly to browse the internet and Windows 7 isn't the quickest with Internet Explorer and neither Chrome is as quick as I am used to, though I only run that on the netbook so it should be quicker.

So any others that could point me to some good operating systems for a netbook, and by the way mine is the Aspire One D250 with Atom N280, which is actually the newest version from Acer with as well 160GB hard disk. And well the Acer provided Windows XP with all their Acer software I didn't like at all as it was making it slow and loading just too much application I just don't use.

Re:Which operating system could work with Aspire One netbook? - 2009/06/12 04:58 I'm not sure how it will compare to others but have you considered the newest version of Ubuntu. I believe it was released very recently. Unfortunately knowing what operating system is right for what platform is not my strong point just a suggestion. Maybe worth looking into.

Thanks for the suggestion and that is really what I am looking for cause indeed Ubuntu has also a version out for netbooks, that require an Intel Atom and lighter specs. So thanks for letting me know, if there any other please do let me know, cause I am really interested in all so I can compare all and try those that are best suited for my needs after my own analysis.

Re:Which operating system could work with Aspire One netbook? - 2009/06/15 16:29 How did you like the standard operating system? I'm thinking of buying one of those for my wife sometime soon her old laptop has display issues it needs a new backlight inverter PCB. They are getting harder to find and more expensive.

Re:Which operating system could work with Aspire One netbook? - 2009/06/15 19:00 You mean the Windows XP that came with the laptop, which is actually a pre-build version with quite a lot of Acer applications? Well I didn't like it as it has too much stuff that it is loading that I don't use and as such it slowing down the netbook. For me a straight to the point one and Windows 7 is nice bit it could do a little better.

Re:Which operating system could work with Aspire One netbook? - 2009/07/08 16:26 I was just wondering if you did end up trying the Ubuntu Remix operating system and if so how was it? Any better than Windows 7 or nothing special?

Well I downloaded the Ubuntu Remix version for netbooks but when I followed the instructions to make a bootable USB stick from it to try it like that it just didn't want to work and was fed up trying. I did try the Moblin linux operating system from a bootable USB stick which works great. Really worth considering.

Re:Which operating system could work with Aspire One netbook? - 2009/07/09 19:48 Also one thing that really does improve the performance in Windows 7 is to change the operation mode from balanced to performance, but to manually adapt the LCD display intensivity. Meaning to lower it as this is a LED based LCD display which are quite bright, or enough so you can really lower it without much loss. And the performance mode does improve the overall operation speed.
