Core 2 Quad Q9450 system and is overclocking really worth it? - 2009/02/12 08:11 Is it all worth it, thatis really the question. Here are the details about my system. I have an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 with OCZ Gold DDR2 PC2-8800 memory, a BFG GeForce GTX 285 OC version and this all on an ASUS P5N-T Deluxe mainboard running Windows Vista 32-bit. Now at stock setting 3DMark Vantage gives a score of 14450 performance level, comprising of GPU score of 12500 point and CPU score of 38000 points. Overclocking my quad core to the max I've reached is 2.93GHz with stock cooler that gives me on average and extra 2 frames only.

My GeForce GTX 285 which is default at 666/24848MHz with shaders at 1512MHz I ahave overclocked to 691/2592MHz and shaders at 1566MHz. It actually locked when trying any higher. Now with all this overclock I managed a score of 14850 on average. In total I got an average of 3-4 frames. If anyone has a similar CPU or video card how high can you go?

Re:Core 2 Quad Q9450 system and is overclocking really worth it? - 2009/02/12 17:21 That Core 2 Quad CPU should go much higher. If you can get it to +3.20GHz you should be in the clear. Cause really this one runs default at 2.66GHz and your overclocking of only 266MHz is just a minor bump.

Re:Core 2 Quad Q9450 system and is overclocking really worth it? - 2009/02/12 18:35 With this system you don't need to overclock anything... It is already running at nice speeds and you should already have great performance. And any overclocking might bump the numbers but do you really need it?

Re:Core 2 Quad Q9450 system and is overclocking really worth it? - 2009/02/12 20:59 If you want your moneys worth out of that card, you need at least over 3.00GHz on that CPU. Cause there is more left in it and it can bump the performance.

Mmm, I would say nice system and it will already deliver great performance and it will be hard to improve. Though you can improve as long as you overclock the CPU more, cause yeah going from 2.66GHz to 2.93GHz isn't much and certainly when it is already a quad core. You need to bump the voltage a tiny bit and get it up to at least 3.20GHz, so an extra 266MHz and even try more. Like try hitting 3.33GHz, but you might need a better CPU cooler as well to lift it to the next level.

Re:Core 2 Quad Q9450 system and is overclocking really worth it? - 2009/02/13 04:03 I have just finished work and I have just tried my AI overclock at 15% which put my CPU at 3.06GHz and my memory at 990MHz and I got as far as typing this message the first time then I got a blue screen. I went straight to the BIOS and the CPU temp was only 40°C and voltage was 1.29V. Do you think I would be better off overclocking manually. I'm now back at AI overclocking at 10% with CPU at 2.93GHz and memory at 880MHz. This gives CPU voltage of 1.22V and temp being 44-46°C just typing this.

Bear in mind I have a cold house, my GeForce GTX 285 is at 34°C compared to the normal 40°C it gives. My system is pretty nippy but everybody always wants to squeeze just that bit more out of their system. I was thinking of getting a Zalman CNPS9700 heatsink cause they get pretty good reviews and don't want to pay much more than $65-70, thanks for everyone's advice.

Re:Core 2 Quad Q9450 system and is overclocking really worth it? - 2009/02/13 05:07 I like to start doing overclock with high voltage and drop down until I fail stress testing. I would suggest getting aftermarket cooling to go past 3.00GHz and 1.34V. If your case can accommodate it the Sunbeam CCTF 120mm is nice. I just got one and I love it. Keeps my quad core running at 3.2GHz and 1.53V under 55°C under 100% load.

Oh you use that AI overclock feature, which is a nice to have but isn't the best solution for overclocking and personally I never use that as it more often doesn't work too good. Manual overclocking is what makes the real difference, so you should really go that way when doing overclocking on the CPU itself.

Re:Core 2 Quad Q9450 system and is overclocking really worth it? - 2009/03/05 04:42 I will be receiving a new OCZ Vendetta CPU cooler, so hopefully it will do the job and cool down the processor even beter and further.

Re:Core 2 Quad Q9450 system and is overclocking really worth it? - 2009/03/05 09:07 I recently upgraded my quad SLI system of a couple of years ago to a Core 2 Extreme which was a lemon, RMA'd the sucker. Now this system, is a Core 2 Quad Q9450 which is the only piece water cooled with the Exos 2 and running at 3.20GHz with more in the tank. I had it running at 3.50GHz but haven't gotten a chance to benchmark it much. There's just too much too play with around here in the game room. My point is, ya get some good cooling on that puppy and see where it can go ans it has great overclocking potential and yes manual overclocking is the way to go, more options for sure...
