GeForce 8800 GT and newest drivers only gives blank screen!? - 2009/04/01 03:18
Okay, so I bought all these components for a new computer. All of my parts are new with the exception of the graphics card which I got from my friend when he joined the marines. The card is a Palit GeForce 8800 GT 1GB Super+ that he won for getting first place in a tourney a year or so ago, and he never actually put it in his computer because it was only marginally better than the card he was using. So, when I put this card in my system, it works, but if I install any driver that is newer than ForceWare 178.24, my screen goes blank once I get past the Windows or Ubuntu boot screen.
The system crashes in some way, but because the screen goes blank, I can't see what is happening, and I haven't been able to find anything in my event log, either. When the computer does reboot, the hard disk volume is not considered dirty as it doesn't ask if I would like to boot normally or try safe mode, it just boots normally. I've tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows XP or Vista and Windows 7 beta, including Ubuntu with no luck! I tried every driver version newer than ForceWare 178.24, including betas and they all have the same problem.
Oh, another note when I use ForceWare 178.24 it thinks I'm using a GeForce 9600 GSO rather than a GeForce 8800 GT edition. Does anyone have any ideas? I was also thinking that upgrading my BIOS would help, as a lot of people talked about GeForce 8800 GT's not cooperating with VIA chipsets. When I used NiBiTor to read my current BIOS, it thinks I have a GeForce 9600 GSO. When I read the BIOS a box comes up saying device unknown but it knows its a GeForce 8 series. The device ID is showing FFFF so unsupported.
When I got a boot disk set up with nvFlash and I get a BIOS for Palit with 62.92.23.00.00, nvFlash either also tells me I have an unsupported GeForce 9600 GSO or doesn't detect it at all, depending on the version I use. This is embarrassing to say, but I literally spend over eight hours on Sunday trying to get the BIOS flashed with no results. Is there anyone out there who can help me, I am running an Intel Core i7 920 processor on an ASUS P6T6 WorkStation mainboard.
That's all the relevant info I can think to list right now. Let me know if you need anything else, please. And also the original BIOS is attached. If someone has some kind of an idea to get this resolved any help is more than welcome.
