Home theater PC when shutdown TV no longer being detected? - 2009/03/14 07:01 I have been doing a bit of research into home theater PC and the issues I have been experiencing. It appears that I'm not alone in having display issues with my home theater PC connected to my HDTV. I have a Samsung A650 series LCD TV which when turned off for a period of time is not detected by the home theater PC anymore, as the home theater PC thinks its been disconnected as its not able to successfully perform an EDID handshake, as I think thats what it's called.

The long and the short of it is its and EDID issue which can be resovled by buying a device that goes between the home theater PC and the HDTV which tricks the home theater PC into thinking the the HDTV is always on and so it never loses the signal when waking up from sleep or standby. Unfortunately this device is very expensive. I'm somewhat convinced that this issue could be resolved by a BIOS hack or a software hack that NVIDIA is currently unwilling and/or unable to make for whatever reason. But ATI cards also have this same issue by the way.

So, would it be posible in your experience to modify the BIOS in such a way that it doesn't think the monitor once detected is ever disconnected? In effect performing the same function as this external box I just mentioned. This problem causes real havoc on home theater PC's running HDMI and it would be great if the community could fix it as the manufacturers don't appear to be coming to the party. Thanks.

Re:Home theater PC when shutdown TV no longer being detected? - 2009/03/14 11:19 Thank for sharing mate, though we have seen this in the past from some other person and we didn't find any solution at that time which was not too long ago. The main issue is if you want anything done by ATI or NVIDIA you need to all start contacting your manufacturer technical support and if they get many customers complaining about the same thing that is driving and pushing the two chip makers to move their ass.

So unless someone does know something we don't know about the BIOS's, which is certainly possible and that has to do with this EDID function than we are certainly very keen to learn and if possible to enhance NiBiTor to offer you some kind of tweak for this issue you have encountered. But for now there is nothing known to us that will do what you are asking for from a BIOS persepctive.

Re:Home theater PC when shutdown TV no longer being detected? - 2009/03/14 14:16 I must be either misunderstanding or not having such an issue as I recently purchased a Samsung 50inch HDTV and currently have it connected via HDMI to one of the GeForce 9800 GX2 cards in a home theater PC setup with a Blu-ray drive and the PC run always but power down the TV at night. When I power it back on everything is as I left it, dreamscene running sweet. Maybe it is some model of TV having this issue as opposed to the PC hardware? My TV is a Samsung 50P410 plasma version.

Re:Home theater PC when shutdown TV no longer being detected? - 2009/03/14 15:31 Hmm okay. It was worth a try, thanks for the quick reply. I will try some other point of attack I guess. It could be a compatibility issue I suppose, a very wide spread one. As a lot of people are reporting this issue with many different TV's and monitors too. It's mainly an issue with Windows Vista from what I have read. Powering off the monitor, or the PC losing sync with the TV from going to sleep or hibernate seems to be treated like the monitor being removed from the video card and the PC won't pick up the attached display again until its rebooted.

I was hoping the video BIOS contained the instructions or code that processed the EDID information coming in from the attached displays, which is then passed on to the operating system. But I seem to have drawn a blank from everyone who knows more about this than I do. I hope I'm not barking up the wrong tree here but does anyone know how to stop Vista, the 64-bit in my case from detecting display device disconnactions and/or connections? Or is it so low level and protected it can't be changed?

Well I wouldn't have a clue really but maybe some one can tell us with more more operating system experience? By the way does the same happen when you use Windows XP? Just wondering cause you mentioned especially Vista, so I would like to know if the same is seen with Windows XP?

Re:Home theater PC when shutdown TV no longer being detected? - 2009/03/14 23:18 By the way I am using Vista Ultimate in 64-bit also, I will observe if this does occur but so far I haven't had any issues as you describe and as I have said before I also shutdown my TV but not my home theater PC and still it get detected once I turn on my TV again.

I can't comment on Windows XP personally because I haven't taken the time to test with it but my reading at some forums which would indicate that people are mostly experienceing it with Windows Vista. I just found a thread at XPMediaCentre that has a work around for it but I am yet to try it. It accurately describes the issue I am having even though I have a different video card and TV.

Re:Home theater PC when shutdown TV no longer being detected? - 2009/03/15 10:34 Okay, thanks for the inputs. So I will go from the point that this is somehow purely a Windows Vista issue and well Vista isn't the best operating system that Microsoft released so no surprise there really. Well I see that some MultiRes program would be able to help and fix this by changing the refresh rate somehow.

Re:Home theater PC when shutdown TV no longer being detected? - 2009/03/16 10:01 Yeah, all it seems that MultiRes is doing is providing an easy way to create a hotkey or macro to change resolution and reinitialise the video output of the video card without having to reboot. NVIDIA are still dragging their ass with bringing their Windows Vista drivers up the the same level of features and control that the Windows XP drivers have.

With Windows XP I was able to create hotkey for enabling and/or disabling first or second monitor. No such luck with Vista. Oh well it doesn't look like we will be fixing this issue through the video BIOS anytime soon. I just have to pray to the NVIDIA driver gods and hope they see the light.
