ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 512MB and graphics card overheating? - 2009/02/23 19:54 Hi all, my graphics card, a Radeon HD 2600 XT coming with 512MB of GDDR3 memory which is currently overheating, but only when I load up World of Warcraft. I have a screenshot from RivaTuner that shows this bizarre behaviour. The GPU usage goes up to 100% when World of Warcraft is active, leading to GPU temp going up to +100°C before causing the computer to shutdown completely. It is not being overclocked at all, by the way.

It's definitely World of Warcraft only because if I switch out to check the monitoring status, the temperature slowly drops down to idle level which is usually 60°C. As soon as I switch back into World of Warcraft, I can hear the fan increasing in speed and sure enough, the temperature rises again. Nothing else causes any problems, it usually sits happily around 60°C whatever else is going on.

I have a copy of my BIOS which I am also attaching for your reference. How can I go about fixing this overheating problem? Is it related to the GPU voltage, and if I reduce this will it decrease the temperature? Or is it because maybe the max temp for the GPU is set too low, which means the computer is shutting down prematurely? Or is 100°C too hot anyway? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Re:ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 512MB and graphics card overheating? - 2009/02/23 22:54 Well I have a doubt that it will only happen when playing World of Warcraft, have you tried any other new games such as Crysis or anything? I am just wondering cause Crysis is one hell of game taking a lot of load and should drive temps up as well. So can you try or have you tried? And the +100°C is normal for certain ATI cards but the card should not choke on it really, cause that is the main pain point for ATI, their cards tend to get hot, and in your case even too hot.

Have you already tried to re-apply the heatsink and fresh thermal paste? Meaning not just like we see from the brands just putting a big junk on it and pressing the heatsink on. Cause that is causing bad thermal behavior. You should apply a thin to very thin layer which is just to make sure the space between the GPU and the cooler is not filled with a litte air but the thermal paste and that often reduces the temps by 5-10°C when it was badly applied in the first place.

Re:ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 512MB and graphics card overheating? - 2009/02/24 02:22 You're right, I haven't tried any other games so it could just be the case with any program that pushes the GPU a lot. What thermal paste do you recommend I try? I will have a look at the card tomorrow if I have time, that sounds like the most sensible solution. You mentioned that +100°C is normal, which I feel is probably right with this particular card, but my computer just shuts down anyway after a certain level. Is there a setting I can tweak to try and stop the computer from shutting down?

I tried using a manual fan override setting to keep it at 100% but it wasn't enough to stop the shutdown. Is there a way to specify the temperature threshold? Either in BIOS or by software? Maybe the card is only getting up to 110°C but if the threshold is 105°C or something then it will always crash first, but if it's set at 115°C. Do you see what I mean? Thanks a lot.

Well I think there is indeed such a setting but playing with that isn't a good idea as it is to protect the GPU, typically this threshold is set at 110°C to 130°C depending on the card, but really I don't advise to mess with that cause one the GPU is overheating it will cause permanent damage and you will face it rather faster than later and your warranty won't cover it if you messed with the threshold. So first is to look at the cooling solution and any good thermal paste will do, but I tend to opt for the Arctic Cooling MX-2 compound.
