MSI Radeon HD 3870 card won't boot in PCI Express x16 slot? - 2009/01/15 16:49 Hi, I have an MSI Radeon HD 3870, but it won't boot in the bleu slot of my ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe mainboard. When I put it in the black slot it boots up. But I thinks its at x8 as such for the PCI Express and as I am missing out on performance. Any Ideas?

Re:MSI Radeon HD 3870 card won't boot in PCI Express x16 slot? - 2009/01/15 20:10 Okay, I have just checked out a bit what kind of mainboard you have and you got one that support CrossFire and has four PCI Express expansion slots. And you can have up to two at the same time running as PCI Express x16 if you use one more only the first one will remain at x16 and the others at x8. And if you use all four, these will all run at only x8. But a real performance drop you won't notice. Adn in fact your mainboard manual states which one can run PCI Express x16. Also just look at what GPU-Z reports to be sure at what speed it actually runs.

Re:MSI Radeon HD 3870 card won't boot in PCI Express x16 slot? - 2009/01/15 20:16 Thanks, but now the card won't run. I get five beeps, two short and three long. I think the card is dead. What I had was, that the card won't boot at all, in the top slot, and the 2nd it did, that's weird. Now I only get beeps, so the MSI Radeon HD 3870 is just a goner...

Re:MSI Radeon HD 3870 card won't boot in PCI Express x16 slot? - 2009/01/15 20:20 Just one thing whet kind of power supply you got cause this card does need a good power supply to power the card and as long as it beeps I wouldn't say it is dead. If it wouldn't beep an do nothing that would something else than it could just be a goner.

Re:MSI Radeon HD 3870 card won't boot in PCI Express x16 slot? - 2009/01/15 21:32 I have a Cooler Master Pro 700W. I also tried a Sapphire Radeon X1950 PRO graphics card and when the power is conected it doesn't beeps. Without the power it beeps. So can it be the power supply?

Just to be sure which one you got exactly, is it that Silent Pro M700 you got from Cooler Master? Cause in that case I don't think the power supply is the issue if you connect the PCI Express power connector to it. But is really depends on how much Amps your power supply supplies on the 12V rail dedicated for the PCI Express power connection.

Re:MSI Radeon HD 3870 card won't boot in PCI Express x16 slot? - 2009/01/16 15:00 I have the RealPower Pro 700 and it says 12V rail with 19Amps. That must be enough I think? I also tried another board M3A , and only get beeps when the card is inserted. But when I use a PCI video it boots and work fine. The Radeon X1950 PRO isn't working anymore. I only get 5 beeps from the board, just like the Radeon HD 3870. Could one card kill the other?

Re:MSI Radeon HD 3870 card won't boot in PCI Express x16 slot? - 2009/01/16 16:39 Well I am not so sure that 19Amps is sufficient, cause all the high-end cards and the Radeon HD 3780 is such a one of previous generation did require normally +20Amps with most of these around the 24-26Amps. So I don't know for sure. Can you check and borrow a power supply from someone to try? Cause it is strange...
