MSI P35D3 Platinum with GeForce 9800 GT, always reboots!? - 2008/12/23 01:48 If anybody can help me to solve a rebooting issue with MSI P35D3 Platinum mainboard? I'm currently having rebooting issues with video card being installed on my MSI P35D3 Platinum motherboard which is running with the version 1.6 of the mainboard BIOS before installing any operating system or software. It came originally with version 1.1 but tried all version up to the latest. All versions of mainboard BIOS do cause reboots. I've installed BIOS's from the MSI P35 Platinum and MSI P35 Platinum Combo and it makes the video card work without any issues. My power supply is a Logisys 575W with a dedicated line for the video card.

Currently I'm using the MSI P35 Platinum Combo BIOS on my motherboard. What I did was tried different components to see if there was compatibility issue. Eventually it boiled down to the video card. When I used an ASUS GeForce 9400 GT it booted with no problems using original mainboard BIOS. I really want to use the PNY GeForce 9800 GT. So I suspected the motherboard BIOS causes the issue. I used the BIOS's for the MSI P35 Platinum and P35 Platinum Combo to test my theory. They both flashed correctly and it allowed me to boot everything up. I installed operating system, all drivers and games for testing.

Before I installed the operating system, I put my original video card back and it works. The only two issues I noticed so far was system temp in motherboard BIOS shows 127°C and second ACPI shows installed but has and exclamation mark next to it. So far, I played Call Of Duty 5, World of Warcraft online for hours with no problems. I tried watching movies with my burner and no issues. As for CPU temp, goes down in the low 30°C's in idle and goes up to 42°C when I play games considering the system is all air cooled.

I left messages with MSI on their website to rewrite the mainboard BIOS. Already contacted MSI and PNY but both of them saying the other has to rewrite their respective BIOS's. If anyone can shed some light, I would really appreciate it.

My System Specifications...
- MSI P35D3 Intel P35 Chipset Mainboard
- Intel Core 2 Quad E6600 2.4GHz Processor
- SuperTalent 2GB DDR3 1066MHz Dual Memory
- PNY GeForce 9800 GT 1024MB Video Card
- Western Digital Caviar 500GB SATA Hard Disk
- Liteon LightScribe 20X SATA DVD±RW Burner
- Logisys 575W SLI Ready Power Supply
- Antec 900 Advanced Gaming Case
- DCL 19" LCD Display Monitor
- Windows Vista 32-bit Ultimate incl. SP1

Well mate, well detailed story though didn't see this yet really and from what I would think this would be the mainboard since it works when you use a different BIOS of a similar P35 based mainboard from MSI. On that aspect we doubt it has anything to do with the graphics card, but by all means you can always try to flash it with another GeForce 9800 GT BIOS and see if that makes a difference?

Re:MSI P35D3 Platinum with GeForce 9800 GT, always reboots!? - 2008/12/23 11:46 Which video BIOS would you recommend for this board which is a PCI Express 2.0 version with 1024MB of GDDR3 memory on a 256-bit edition bandwidth interface?

Well, I would say any other GeForce 9800 GT BIOS of a 1GB version with standard clock speeds would be good to try really. I doubt that it will make any difference, but ot is something you can try...

Re:MSI P35D3 Platinum with GeForce 9800 GT, always reboots!? - 2008/12/24 12:06 I have a friend who has this same issue. His system would randomly reboot and when he would put his old GeForce 7800 GT in the problem is gone. I took his card and tested it out in my computer for about five days and not a single issue. I flashed his motherboards BIOS to the most up to date version and still had the issue. All and all with him his computer already had lots of known issues so I got him to upgrade his mainboard, processor and memory so we will see if that fixes it. If so I would point my finger at your motherboard, maybe there is a compatibilty issue.

I would look at some customer reviews on both the card you got and your motherboard and look for anyone who has had these issues. If you cannot find anything there is also a very good possiblity your power supply isn't putting out enough Amps on your 12V rail. Sad to say it but buying a cheap power supply won't cut it for todays cards. Like the saying goes, you get what you pay for. And I just came across this Logisys 575W which has 25Amps on the 12V rail. And I know for my GeForce GTX 260, it has a requirement of 38Amps. I'm pretty sure for a GeForce 9800 GT is something like 26Amps.

I would really look into a higher quality power supply. I hope I was of some help, and hope you can get your GeForce 9800 GT going the way it was meant to. Also here are some brands which make quality power supplies and are very trusted, like OCZ, PC Power & Coooling, Thermaltake, Enermax, Antec and that is only to name a few. But also always look at the Amps the 12V rail can supply.

Good thinking mate, and indeed the GeForce 9800 GT does need a good quality power supply with a dedicated 12V rail that can give enough Amps. But I would think it is the mainboard and if I would still have warranty I would try to go back to the shop and exchange it for a different one.
