Problems with flashing BIOS onto Sapphire Radeon HD 4870? - 2008/08/03 00:14 Hi there, I recently bought two Sapphire Radeon HD 4870' and put them in CrossFire. I also edited the BIOS and set the fanspeed to my own desire. I ripped my BIOS with GPU-Z and flashed with ATIWinFlash, piece of cake. Now I want to flash the Diamond XB version BIOS and in ATIWinFlash I always get the error video BIOS not found. I don't know what I do wrong here...

Re:Problems with flashing BIOS onto Sapphire Radeon HD 4870? - 2008/08/03 06:23 Try this, you have to run it through the command prompt. So first create a new folder in the root directory of your "C:" drive so you can easily navigate to it in DOS. Than copy all the ATIWinFlash files and the new BIOS to this new folder. Next open command prompt and navigate to your new folder. And now use the normal ATIFlash command.

ATIFlash v3.xx Commands...
"atiwinflash -f -p 0 newbios.rom" (Forced BIOS Flashing)

It should take a minute or two to flash and it will tell you to reboot. You'll have to reinstall your video driver but everything worked for me after that. Just a warning, if you don't get a successful confirmation at the end of the flash, make sure you flash it again before you reboot. You will brick your card if you reboot before a successful flash.

Re:Problems with flashing BIOS onto Sapphire Radeon HD 4870? - 2008/08/07 20:23 Glad to be helpful. When you have a minute can you post your idle and/or load temps at that clock speed with your Sapphire card. Thank you!

Thank you mate for helping out, good to see that some others guys are providing their view on things and how it should work. Keep it up, and thanks again.

Re:Problems with flashing BIOS onto Sapphire Radeon HD 4870? - 2008/08/07 23:13 Well I changed the fan speed with RBEditor to the use look up table. Idle is 60°C with 30% fan speed and load doesn't go above 70°C. The only weird thing is that I get less points in 3DMark06. Core is 820MHz max with memory at 4400MHz stable. But if I lower my memory I can get a higher core clock. Up to 835-840MHz and Vantage stable. Also weird that almost everything is stable at 840/3800MHz except 3DMark06 in the forest level. Very weird, can't explain. And guys at keep up the good work. Next thing I will do is flash the ASUS BIOS in the cards and see what it gives. Ciao...

Re:Problems with flashing BIOS onto Sapphire Radeon HD 4870? - 2008/08/08 05:12 Have you considered running an aftermarket cooler? Because it can help out in the overclocking department. If you are getting lower scores from pushing too far on the memory and/or core it could be its getting warm and losing its efficiency. Also you may want to consider this everytime you clock up the memory it is multiplied by four. Cause the Radeon HD 4870's uses GDDR5 memory which is 3600MHz actual speed.

Re:Problems with flashing BIOS onto Sapphire Radeon HD 4870? - 2008/09/07 10:44 Hi, is it possible to get a copy of the original Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 BIOS from you, so can you share the backup you made? Thanks in advance...

Re:Problems with flashing BIOS onto Sapphire Radeon HD 4870? - 2008/09/07 11:06 Just look at the downloads section on this website, it has only original BIOS's and as far as I have been able to see the Sapphire is on there as well.
