GeForce 9800 GX2 overclocking and any stability testing help? - 2008/08/28 19:37 I have been overclocking on a GeForce 9800 GX2 series and it really just is getting annoying as most of the tests I used to use do not really work as good as I would like. For example ATITool which used to find artifacts quick and help me out now doesn't seem to find anything, but then while watching my 3DMark06 I get artifacts and dead pixels. I have tried a few freeware programs but am just wondering, what's the best. I want something that is as conclusive as Prime95 but for GPU's. Is there anything I can bank on that will produce results across the board to better help me fine tune my clock before changing the BIOS. Thanks for your time.

Re:GeForce 9800 GX2 overclocking and any stability testing help? - 2008/08/28 20:36 Mmm as conclusive, well sorry but even Prime95 isn't that conclusive. And for graphic scard I wish you good luckto find something, but ATITool is best to be used to find artifacts but yeah in multi-GPU solutions is doesn't give always accurate results as it are actually two different card put to together as one. So yeah using 3DMark06 or 3DMark Vantage and some games like Crysis would be your best bet...

Re:GeForce 9800 GX2 overclocking and any stability testing help? - 2008/08/28 20:55 Well in my Prime95 analogy I meant that it says error. ATITool will tell me that there is a dead pixel or something at such delta but really never says error, so I am forced to watch the screen. Was just going something was out there. Thanks for the reply Mavke and you made a great site by the way. Been downloading and browsing for a while just finally decided to post. One question though. Is there a better verison of ATITool. The one I did download is ATITool v0.0.27 beta is full of bugs and errors and crashes. Thanks.

Re:GeForce 9800 GX2 overclocking and any stability testing help? - 2008/08/28 21:12 There is no better version than the latest beta version of ATITool and the multi-GPU is not always accurate related to artifacts. And that is because again you have two PCB's put together each with their own memory chips, and it could be that one has artifact the other not and ATITool can just stress both as it should. There is no other tool, and again Prime95 is neither flawless as I had it for my CPU saying no errors thought it would fail in some applications. All a matter of what yoru are really doing in the end. But yeah for a graphics card the only tool knows to stress a card is ATITool although it seems the same coder is working in something new, better normally.

Mmm, I have a GeForce 9800 GX2 as well in my system and the latest beta you can download on the forums from the coder is working just fine, no bugs or crashes on my system. I am assuming you donwloaded the latest beta, which is only available in the forums? Yes artifacts can't be easily counted, except when the GPU is artifacting as then it gives rendering and coding errors, but the first artifacts are mainly coming from the memory and that isn't really giving rendering errors in applications but is any visible on screen and you better stop that fast as that means permant damage will be done to memory if you that is starting.

Re:GeForce 9800 GX2 overclocking and any stability testing help? - 2008/08/28 21:28 Interesting, the visible things on the screen I would see in 3DMark06 was I would like to call them small explosion almost a burst of color would pop up or an animation would seem transparent for a second. When this would happen of course I would stop and then tune back down. I only got this error because I was stepping the overclocking with ATITool which was giving me no errors for quite some time. Could you send a link to the donwload for the ATITool. Because my ATITool will crash after I start any test or try to move a setting once I have already done something else.

Re:GeForce 9800 GX2 overclocking and any stability testing help? - 2008/08/29 00:00 Thanks for that. I just got the latest v0.0.26 and I am seeing a lot more. However if I click the find max core or max memory my screen becomes all blue and I have to restart. I am sure that is not suppose to happen so I am avoiding those two buttons. I am redoing my clock from default now since I think this version might be a little better then the other I was using to stress test. How long do you scan for artifacts before moving on to another test?

Re:GeForce 9800 GX2 overclocking and any stability testing help? - 2008/08/29 02:27 Just try the latest beta that is available on the forums, which should be ATITool v0.0.27 beta. It might prove more stable for you, as v0.0.26 is quite old now and was from before the GeForce 9 series.

Re:GeForce 9800 GX2 overclocking and any stability testing help? - 2008/08/29 02:49 Thanks for the link. The I got of Guru3D was v0.0.27 beta but maybe it was a bad install. Because it was causing a lot of problems. Will let you know if I have more success with the util in your link. Thanks...

Re:GeForce 9800 GX2 overclocking and any stability testing help? - 2008/08/29 07:54 Just my 2 cents here as I run Quad SLI with 2 rigs, a pair of these GeForce 9800 GX2's from EVGA in one of those and found using any version of ATITool and saw yellow flashes on the test before it reported any error. I think there is a lot of memory chips and tools are not perfect enough yet, so I resort to overclock with ATITool or RivaTuner then use games and benchmarks. But it is a very painstaking slow process, but each will have to decide what is acceptable tolerance and what is not. I refuse to run knowing I maybe artifacting and not be seeing it. Certainly may shorten a cards life, in short ambient temps changing constantly, will also affect with such sensitive tool as ATITool...
