Safe overclock of GeForce GTX 280 card with stock cooler? - 2008/06/30 19:29 Hello, my GeForce GTX 280 will arrive next week, I ordered the normal version instead of the overclock version from Inno3D. What's a safe overclock for stock cooler? And am I right to say that the only difference in the normal version and overclock version is that it's factory overclocked and that I can always overclock it to the same core, shader and memory settings? Thanks...

Re:Safe overclock of GeForce GTX 280 card with stock cooler? - 2008/06/30 19:56 Well all cards are different and the save overclock will also be different and that is just as we always say. So really the best way is to find first by using ATITool or any other overclocking tool the maximum core and memory clock speed to know what would be save. And yes normally a default GeForce GTX 280 should be able to run the factory overclock from the same brand, though there is no guarantee, but most of the time you can just got for that.

Re:Safe overclock of GeForce GTX 280 card with stock cooler? - 2008/07/07 18:37 I have read review that could do 700/2450MHz and I try the same clocks with my GeForce GTX 280, but upon running 3DMark Vandage, in the second graphics test, the driver crash, but successfully recovered as Vista reported and so, I can't overclock my ASUS GeForce GTX 280. In Windows XP, I have no problems, although 3DMark06, gave me less points, meaning 11180 marks overclocked and 12890 marks at stock setting.

I've tried with lower clocks, but never pass even the test in NVIDIA control panel, performance tab. I also tried to find optimal clocks, again with NVIDIA control panel, performance, it gave me 742MHz core, 2584MHz memory and 1671MHz shader clock. And although the card works without problems, 3DMark06 again gave me lower performance and so I return to stock clocks and I just leave it this way.

Re:Safe overclock of GeForce GTX 280 card with stock cooler? - 2008/07/08 08:23 Okay, that is not so normal and could be due to several things and most of the time it is because almost all graphics cards are put together too fast and the thermal paste is not optimally applied giving a great loss in thermal efficiency. Secondly the cooling might not be good enough or you might have some power shortage if your power supply is not good enough...
