GeForce GTX 280, dual 6-pin to 8-pin adapter a bad thing? - 2008/07/04 22:46 Hi, NVIDIA says that a dual 6-pin to 8-pin PCI Express adapter is a very bad thing while a single 6-pin to 8-pin is okay. I wonder what they are talking about?

Good question and I wouldn't know the story behind. I would think the dual 6-pin to 8-pin is the way to go as that is what some manufacturers include in their retail package of graphics cards with the need of a 8-pin power connection...

Re:GeForce GTX 280, dual 6-pin to 8-pin adapter a bad thing? - 2008/07/07 17:40 I think that all have to do, with how many 12V rails, have a power supply and how much power can deliver instantly. NVIDIA says that for the GeForce GTX 280, a 12V rail have to deliver 40Amps, for enough power for a single card. In my power supply for example, although it has 5 rails of 12V that can deliver 19Amps each, dual 6-pin, plus dual 8-pin, in combination all five of the 12V rails, can deliver only 56Amps and so my power supply, can't power two GeForce GTX 280 in SLI config.

Re:GeForce GTX 280, dual 6-pin to 8-pin adapter a bad thing? - 2008/07/08 08:29 Well the best way is to have a power supply that has the ability to have at least one 8-pin power connection for the graphics card. But if you don't have that than several brands are supplying with the graphics card a dual 6-pin to 8-pin converter to resolve this and that should just work fine. Though really if you can buy a GeForce GTX 280, then you also can buy a better power supply that has even the capability of two 6+2-pin power connections which is the best option.
