GeForce 7950 GT, modifying voltage in BIOS has no effect? - 2008/07/02 16:57 Hi, this is my first post. Just getting into the world of BIOS editing using NiBiTor. My problem is that no matter what I change my 3D voltage value to, it doesn't seem to have any effect on my temps or stability. I think I've heard that the GeForce 7900 GT's can't change their voltage through the BIOS, so does that mean that the GeForce 7950 GT's are out, too? If so, I'm interested in knowing the reason why. Also, if such is the case, does anyone know how I could do a simple pencil modification on the card to get it's voltage up? Thanks.

Re:GeForce 7950 GT, modifying voltage in BIOS has no effect? - 2008/07/03 08:57 Well welcome, first of all you are right that with the GeForce 7900 GT's you couldn't change the voltage and why is very simple. The BIOS can only increase the voltage if the voltage circuitry has the possibility and the GeForce 7900 GT didn't have that at all, it had only one voltage level. On the GeForce 7950 GT normally you have two voltage levels. Now to be able to help you we would really need to know which brand your card is and the version, and you will also need to attach the original BIOS of your graphics card so we can check it out.

Re:GeForce 7950 GT, modifying voltage in BIOS has no effect? - 2008/07/03 15:16 I apologize cause I wasn't very descriptive in my problem description. I can, by default, change between 1.25 and 1.35 in the BIOS, just like you said. I was attempting to add VIDs for 1.40V and 1.45V, thinking that that alone would change the voltage level. But thank you for clarifying that the BIOS is not the only determining factor for the voltage. So I'll need to change the voltage circuitry, right?

The easiest modification I've found for the GeForce 7950 GT is a conductive ink pen tweak. It changes the voltage to 1.4V. Now that being said, does that mean that after performing the modification I will need to go into the BIOS and add a VID for 1.4V? I'm at work right now so I can't send in my BIOS, but suffice to say that my card's an XFX GeForce 7950 GT with 256MB. Thanks again for you help.

Re:GeForce 7950 GT, modifying voltage in BIOS has no effect? - 2008/07/03 21:16 Well, I've determined that the voltage modification I was looking at is a +0.2V change. I guess it was dubbed a 1.4V update on the site I was looking at because the GeForce 7900 GT runs at 1.2V. So I'm guessing that if my BIOS is running at 1.35V and I put that modification in, it'll take it up to 1.55V. Ouch, so I think I'll change the voltage down to 1.25V in the BIOS and do the modification for a total of 1.45V. Case closed, unless someone else has something helpful to add.

Re:GeForce 7950 GT, modifying voltage in BIOS has no effect? - 2008/07/03 23:18 So you are talking about the hardware modification and yes that you do with what you want, and many sites have details about that but that is not really our style as by doing so you loose the warranty. And yes it is traceable even when you undo it. The voltage tweaks via the BIOS are not as many manufacturers set their cards alreadt at the 1.35V to overclock better than with the standard 1.25V.

And no you can't just go introducing new VID's with other voltage numbers as you want as the voltage circuitry won't know these and won't neither be able to unstand these. The GeForce 7950 GT only knows the two VID's levels which can give 1.25V or 1.35V and that is it. So whatever you change to try and make 1.40V or 1.45V won't make any difference at all. But yeah enjoy, but make sure you got good cooling!
