Overclocking this GeForce GTX 280, being pre-overclocked? - 2008/06/27 00:37 Hi, I have just got my MSI GeForce GTX 280 OC edition which is running at 650/2300MHz with the shader at 1300MHz and I am facing a little problem. Using RivaTuner or NVIDIA tools, I can downclock but not overclock. It seem's to be locked... Do I have to return to defaults settings through a new BIOS?

Re:Overclocking this GeForce GTX 280, being pre-overclocked? - 2008/06/27 03:45 What driver version are you using? You most certainly don't need to touch the BIOS for this. Making changes via RivaTuner or any other Windows software is purely temporary. When you restart, your card resets to its bootup clocks as stored in the BIOS. If you tell RivaTuner to apply settings at startup, it will only do this once it loads with Windows. Nothing is permanent which is fantastic for testing a more dangerous overclock to see if it is stable enough to flash to the BIOS permanently.

The problem you have sounds more like a problem with RivaTuner supporting this card or a driver problem, which is why I asked for the driver version. Just for those who are going to ask the likely question, he has already uploaded his BIOS in the appropriate thread.

Re:Overclocking this GeForce GTX 280, being pre-overclocked? - 2008/06/27 08:07 I know how to use RivaTuner as well NiBiTor. I'm using last versions and the ForceWare drivers which is version 177.41. The fact is I can't modify factory settings, it tells me wrong settings, can't validate. It's the same with last NVIDIA tools that comply with the lastest driver.

Re:Overclocking this GeForce GTX 280, being pre-overclocked? - 2008/06/27 08:38 RivaTuner only officially supports the ForceWare 175.x drivers, although I am using 177.39 fine. It does say in the release notes that it only has experimental GT200 support. That could be your problem.

Re:Overclocking this GeForce GTX 280, being pre-overclocked? - 2008/06/27 11:08 I know people that have already succesfully overclocked their GT200 series with RivaTuner. Due to the fact that my MSI has factory overclocked settings, it could be the problem that a BIOS flash might fix.

Re:Overclocking this GeForce GTX 280, being pre-overclocked? - 2008/06/27 11:15 Seems very unlikely to me, but when it comes to computers you can never really rule out a possiblility because some solutions just work when they shouldn't really have any effect.

Re:Overclocking this GeForce GTX 280, being pre-overclocked? - 2008/06/27 13:12 Can you backup the original BIOS of your MSI GeForce GTX 280 OC edition and attach it on this thread? Than we can have a look and see if the BIOS would be a blocking factor? Somehow I doubt that really but you never know...

Re:Overclocking this GeForce GTX 280, being pre-overclocked? - 2008/06/27 14:44 Hi Mavke, I've already uploaded it in the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 2x0 section on the forums. Thanks to pay attention to my problem...

Re:Overclocking this GeForce GTX 280, being pre-overclocked? - 2008/06/27 15:24 Well DOT might be getting in the way of something, assuming you installed it. I would completely start again, uninstall all overclocking software you have, uninstall drivers, do a driver cleanup with DriverCleaner, restart, install latest drivers, then simply try just using CoolBits.

Re:Overclocking this GeForce GTX 280, being pre-overclocked? - 2008/06/27 20:21 I've owned several MSI cards, older generations, I would wait for Mavke to view your BIOS just to make sure its the same as a reference cards BIOS. MSI is like that, one card I had had a jumper on it, dual BIOS on chip, for backup purpose I guess, never saw another like it... This being a reference card is unlikely to be a card difference as such, but ya never know.
