EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB a bit of overclocking help? - 2008/06/23 08:03 Hello, let me first say I really like this site. I have done some overclocking in the past but its been awhile. I recently just got an EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS with 320MB. Its stock speeds are 513MHz core, 1188MHz shader and 1584MHz memory says RivaTuner. I was playing with RivaTuner and was able to overclock it a lot. I was kind of getting scared lol. I was able to get it to 660MHz core, 1528MHz shader and 2000MHz memory. I did run the 3D medusa program from NVIDIA and I didn't notice anything wrong.

I did notice a small boost in preformance but not much and the temp only got up to 63°C. I am running an AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor on an ASUS nForce 570 Ultra mainboard with Windows Vista 64-bit. I would like to get the extra boost but I've heard software overclocking isn't the best. My question is. Should I modify my BIOS to overclock and what speeds do you all recommended. Thanks?

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB a bit of overclocking help? - 2008/06/23 18:59 Well I would say that your processor isn't the greatest any longer and the performance increase will also be linked to what the processor is capable of for a great part. Then again you are using Windows Vista which is neither really overclock friendly and the performance results are always less with this operating system. I don't think you will see much difference if you modify your BIOS but you can always try. I would say to try around 630/1900MHz to be save, and the shader as well a bit lower as what you tried with overclocking via software.

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB a bit of overclocking help? - 2008/06/24 02:39 Cool, thank you very much for the info and advise. Now this thing about Windows Wista. I have heard it is a hog and I want to get the max I can out of my rig. I also have Windows XP 64-bit. Would I benifit from that operating system instead of Vista. I have noticed some of the games I play do offer the DirectX 10 graphics but almost look the same in DirectX 9.0c. So now my question is, I'n your opinion, Windows Vista 64-bit or Windows XP 64-bit? Thanks!

My System Configuration...
- ASUS M2N-E nForce570 Ultra Mainboard
- AMD Athmon 64 x2 4800+ 2.5GHz Processor
- EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB Video Card
- G.Skill 2GB DDR2-800 Dual Channel Memory
- Seagate 300GB 7200rpm IDE Hard Disk
- Samsung SyncMaster 20" Widescreen

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB a bit of overclocking help? - 2008/06/24 03:53 Driver support is probably better for Vista 64-bit, although both OS's won't run old hardware that don't have 64-bit drivers available. DirectX 10 is not really a reason to go for Vista unless you play the few select games that actually show a noticable difference in image quality. In any case, it will always run slower than DirectX 9.0c unless games start running native DirectX 10 code instead of being build from the ground up with DirectX 9.0c in mind and having a few DirectX 10 extensions thrown in for marketing purposes while doing virtually nothing for image quality.

I you plan to run Vista 64-bit, you should throw in another 2GB memory, loading times are noticeably faster than with 2GB. Also Vista just looks so much nicer than Windows XP's outdated GUI.

Well Windows Vista will indeed always be slower than Windows XP during games at least for now, since it works with the somehow slower access to the hardware and DirectX 10. Now about the GUI, I am not entirely okay as the more stuff they add the slower it becomes and I am each time turning both in Windows XP and Vista back to the Windows 2000 look more or less which is speedy as hell...

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB a bit of overclocking help? - 2008/06/24 13:29 Do really find the GUI is faster with the old style? I agree that the Vista GUI is slower since it has lots of window effects when opening and closing but the Windows XP one is just boring 2D. I never found the indows XP GUI any slower than the old, grey Windows 9x style.

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB a bit of overclocking help? - 2008/06/24 14:12 Well I guess it is more about personal style and what you like most. I never really liked the XP style much and kinda like the plain and simple style. And it is a bit faster though generally you won't really notice it much.

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB a bit of overclocking help? - 2008/06/25 01:35 Wow, thank you both very much for the opinions. But for my rig which would you guys suggest? I am kind of feeling like going to Windows XP 64-bit because I only have 2GB memory and an older CPU. Speaking of, I am very interested in upgrading to the Phenom x4 CPU and getting 4GB and I would probly be better off in Windows Vista. As for the GUI, that don't bother me. I don't like the old Windows 98 style but I don't really even enjoy the Wista style... Oh, 3D desktop big deal, just click on the task bar sheesh. Anyways, so what do you all suggest for my setup? Is DirectX 10 really that much of a difference? Thanks.

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB a bit of overclocking help? - 2008/06/25 03:16 I don't care much for the 3D GUI, I just like the glassy theme cause it just looks nicer than boring blue or silver. As for DirectX 10, it will depend on the game. World in Conflict shows a noticable difference when you enable one DirectX 10 only visual feature, but it is not like a night and day difference, and like every game takes a performance hit with DirectX 10. Crysis requires you to look for differences, and the performance hit is just not worth the incredibly small image quality difference. You just need to use the ".cfg" hack to get very high in DirectX 9.0c. Googling will lead you to the method for this in no time. You can go with Windows XP now until you need to upgrade to Vista.

Vista doesn't offer alot over XP unless you run Folding@Home, especially the GPU clients. It has slightly better load balancing with dual and quad core CPU's, but nothing significant enough to advertise on the box about. It will come down to either taste or necessity, right now it's taste for most people. The DirectX 9.0c performance difference between XP and Vista is generally negligible now, although XP is still faster in most cases, but no Windows OS has been faster than its predecessor, so that is no real surprise. Personally, I'd go with Vista, but that's because I've already been using it for a while and I like it, but it was a bit of a pain to get used to the new interface in the control panel. With a Phenom and 4GB memory, it is not so much of an easy decision between the two OS's on a purely performance level.

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB a bit of overclocking help? - 2008/06/25 03:28 Awsome info. Thanks a lot with your opinion. By the way I did end up overclocking my video card via BIOS tweak. I'm at 620/1800MHz and shader at 1435MHz and I do get just over 2k more points in 3DMark06 with my CPU at stock so I'm happy with that. Crysis is one hell of a game. At max setting I was getting like 10 fps! At suggested settings around 25ish. Thats just a sick game graphics wise. That was only a demo and I mostly play Bioshock and Jericho style games and those games play flawless at max settings. Thanks again and I think I will just stick with Wista. I hope the upgrades will help some once I get them.
