GeForce 9800 GTX, not detecting 2nd of multiple displays? - 2008/06/17 05:51 I am having a problem with my new XFX GeForce 9800 GTX 512MB card. Only one monitor is detected at any given time, and only on one port. Both monitors work and are connected using DVI cables. If I power the computer off, and than plug in one DVI cable into either connection it will power on and detect the monitor, however if I plug in the 2nd monitor cable into the other connection either while powered on or off, it will not detect the 2nd monitor. I also have the latest drivers for the GPU.

Both monitors are functioning properly and the card works on both slots. However, the card will not work with both slots at the same time. Both monitors are identical ViewSonic 21" LCD monitors. I am really stumped as to why it is not working, I have been tempted to see about backing up the BIOS on the card and re-flashing but I don't know if that would help or cause more problems.

Open the NVIDIA control panel, go to advanced mode if it asks you and select set up multiple displays on the left menu. Make sure you have the right settings there. If it isn't allowing you to select a multiple display mode, click on my display is not shown in the list and follow the instructions.

Re:GeForce 9800 GTX, not detecting 2nd of multiple displays? - 2008/06/17 06:10 The problem had nothing to do with that, I wished it was that easy. I actually just solved my problem by manually inserting this into the registry, you will need to replace the unknown entry with your actual hardware ID for your GPU, you can usually find it by seeing a bunch of games in the registry folder. Once you have inserted the required, reboot, now you have to understand the 2nd monitor will not work yet.

When you have rebooted goto the NVIDIA control panel and you will be able to see the option to enable two monitors in the multiple display area. Configure each monitor independantly and by some magic, the 2nd monitor will turn on and work.

Re:GeForce 9800 GTX, not detecting 2nd of multiple displays? - 2008/06/17 15:52 I don't think its a Windows bug, because the 2nd monitor still doesn't turn on during boot up. I think there is just a problem with either the graphics card or some kind of detection of the monitor.

Re:GeForce 9800 GTX, not detecting 2nd of multiple displays? - 2008/06/18 02:59 Well I've never had two monitors so I'm not sure if not having the second monitor turn on at bootup is normal or not. It's not like you need heaps of screen space for the BIOS so I don't think it's a real big deal.
