Overclocking my CPU, and changing system memory voltage? - 2008/06/02 02:42 Hey, I want to upgrade my 2GB's of DDR2 533MHz of unbranded memory to the OCZ Platinum 800MHz. I've read about voltage changes, mine runs at 1.9V but the OCZ needs 2.1V but my BIOS is locked in that area as with all other areas. Is there any other way to change it? If not I'm so pissed at my BIOS because you can't do anything with it I can't overclock my CPU which is an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 running at 2.4GHz which I wanna put up to 3.0GHz. How do you go about changing the BIOS of your PC? I want one which allows overclocking and changing of voltages!

They deliberately remove those options. It is possible to modify the BIOS, but it is very risky and you need to be good with a HEX editor, and with these many changes you have a high risk of a motherboard BIOS which needs to be hot flashed. Some software like Clockgen and CrystalCPUID can allow you to overclock in Windows, but they don't allow system memory voltage changes, only CPU related changes.

Re:Overclocking my CPU, and changing system memory voltage? - 2008/06/02 08:48 When you go for Packard Bell you know that you will have limitations and those are that you won't be able to overclock via the BIOS. That is just normal as Packard Bell is making the full package and they give very good warranty to compete with Dell and HP. So in that aspect you are blocked, just as if you would have bought a Dell or HP for that matter. They need to be able to give a good warranty and therefore they will lock out anything that could give them issues, like overclocking or whatever other changes a customer could do, which is just normal.

So you are bound to that and there isn't really anything you can do about that until you decide to go to a shop that can build you a PC as you want, with the hardware you select or even better you just buy the hardware yourself and put it together. That is how you can do whatever you want with your PC and that is what every overclocker will go for. In your case you would at least need a different mainboard and I guess most other components you could recuperate from your Packard Bell...

Good idea, that is an option to certainly try, and most likely they will be able to put in a better and most likely newer mainboard that has the flexibility for the overclocking and tweaking.

That is indeed a good point, though I would really then upgrade to a new mainboard and graphics card, cause AGP is really not going to cut it any longer and certainly it won't make much different if you overclock your PC with such older technology...
