Re:GeForce 8800 GTS, changing device ID to GeForce 9800 GTX? - 2008/04/19 12:47 DarkFox wrote:
Well NVIDIA is well known for less than ethical tactics regarding performance with their drivers, as we have seen in the past.
As such you are correct, but those where all software tweaks for specific benchmark programs or games and was the same for all their products. There is no way of increasing the performance via drivers for a GeForce 9800 GTX alone without having the same impact on the G92 based GeForce 8800 GTS... Same chip, same logic and some tweaks to gain more performance.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS, changing device ID to GeForce 9800 GTX? - 2008/04/21 00:13 I have now tested this rebranding and it doesn't work. In the BIOS file, I changed device ID from 0600 to 0612 and also subsystem ID from 0502 to 2371. I left the subvendor ID, as is. If I change the board ID, the name and/or title becomes unreadable, so I don't dare to flash that modification. Oh yes, in case some of you wonder do not try to flash the GeForce 9800 GTX BIOS into the GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB, I tried and it shows only artifacts. Anyhow, I reflashed back my custom tweaked GeForce 8800 GTS BIOS.

Anyhow, if someone finds out how we can change it to the GeForce 9800 GTX I'm very interested. Its not because its cool, but games feature the detect settings based on your hardware and they usually tell me medium or high, while I can in reality run very high. Also its cool for benchmarks. What would be even cooler, would be to reflash the G92 based GeForce 8800 GTS to a GeForce 2 MX and then edit the ".inf" file of thedrivers to install on that device ID and then run the 3DMark 06, lol... But I think I'll pass on that one. will be too much work each time drivers arrive.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS, changing device ID to GeForce 9800 GTX? - 2008/04/22 11:03 I would like to work on that too, but I'm not at home right now. Try to HEX edit the BIOS and change the board ID. I'm looking forward to what that would do.

Yes the board ID needs to be changed and the best way if via HEX edit, and there is a reason why it is not as such easy feasible in NiBiTor as we somehow to make sure you won't all screw up your cards. Cause yeah in the end we will get the bad feedback and that is not what we want. So whoever is willing to rename a graphics card really does need some HEX edit skills and that is our way of preventing that everyone just goes in and makes changes and flashes whatever they think will work, which mostly won't.
