Well I don't know if anyone tried it, but having checked the BIOS's of both cards these are almost identical and actually early GeForce 9800 GTX cards came first with very new GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB BIOS's which of course where set at the higher GTX clock speeds.

That would be somehow normal as the memory used on the GeForce 9800 GTX is much faster and with different memory timings, so before flashing a GeForce 8800 GTS you should first set the timings as they where on the GTS and that is the hardest part of the game...

Got artifacts like crazy. Anyhow, I also tried changing the device ID to GeForce 9800 GTX, but for some reason, it still appears as GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB in Windows.

Yeps I have followed that up to a certain moment, until I think my trip to St. Louis and then I was a week out without very limited access to the internet. But it is normal that you got those artifacts, as memory timings are different. And also on the device ID that is not sufficient to get it recognize as a GeForce 9800 GTX version.
