Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2007/12/17 23:08 Okay guys... I've just tried the experiment and flashed the Sapphire's BIOS, again using ATIFlash v3.25, which became my new friend. To keep it short, obviously I needed the force flash. So flashed it, successfully, and rebooted. Wow, what a garbage on the screen! I guess Mavke is right... I need a 256MB AGP BIOS to try this again. Yes, I was able to reflash the original BIOS, so don't worry, I won't give up!

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2007/12/18 00:59 I did it... After an hour of searching for a different BIOS for my ASUS Radeon X1650 PRO, I've simply realized that there isn't one based on the Radeon X1650 PRO... Because I really like Sapphire, I looked in the downloads section of Sapphire's BIOS files and found the Radeon X1600 PRO BIOS with AGP interface and 256MB memory. Okay, I think you already know the rest of the story, don't you? Well, at least quite, first I've modified the BIOS to the same core frequency as the original BIOS (attached to this post).

Yes, now I've flashed it, again using ATIFlash v3.25, rebooted and the adapter is fully working, no garbage and stable... Installed the newest Catalyst 7.11 and what do I see? Well, nothing wrong! Holy crap, it really works! Thanks for the supporting, I've given you both a karma point. I really like this board. The irony of the story, if you tell an ASUS graphics adapter that it's a faked Sapphire graphics adapter, it will please you so much, because it hated the ASUS firmware itself so deep!

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2007/12/18 18:51 Well done mate, good to see that with the Sapphire BIOS your card is now working as it should. Well I guess you had a very strange Radeon X1650 PRO from ASUS... And maybe it is just the strange ASUS, who knows.

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/01/18 14:02 Hello guys, Drago you probaply remember my name from the ASUS forums site. I had the same problem as you. I have the same Radeon AX1650 PRO 256MB AGP with BIOS. Can someone please tell me exactly how to flash this screwed card and forget about ASUS? I'm not a beginner but I don't want to experiment at this period of time. I'm using Windows XP 32-bit and I've downloaded ATIFlash v3.25 and the working BIOS that you said. What do I do from there? So I need your detailed help. Thank you for your time!

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/01/20 18:54 Hi, I have also a Radeon AX1650 PRO AGP and I have tried to flash my BIOS with ATIFlash v3.25. But I always get the following error message, command operation without options, ROM not erased. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for help!

ATIFlash v3.xx Commands...
"atiflash -p -f 0 biosname.rom"
"atiflash -p -f 0 bios.rom -atmel"

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/01/24 15:37 Hello you two. No, I didn't remember you arakas, but I've looked another time and saw, that you were the thread starter there. Well, it's not easy to provide a flash command, that works with every ASUS card (because they seem to have used different BIOS chips on this card, but I can provide a little help... First, make sure, that you have the ASUS Radeon AX1650 PRO AGP with 256MB of DDR2 memory. You can find it out if your memory is clocked at 800MHz effective.

Now you need two floppy disks, one bootable Win98 and/or WinME floppy and a second where you put the BIOS file and ATIFlash v3.25. Boot with the bootable floppy, you can choose the 4th option, minimal boot wait until completed and insert the second floppy. Use one of the following commands below, unfortunately I can't tell you which command will work with your card, but for sure one of those!

ATIFlash v3.xx Commands...
"atiflash -p -f 0 a_s1600p.rom"
"atiflash -p -f 0 a_s1600p.rom -sst"
"atiflash -p -f 0 a_s1600p.rom -newbios"
"atiflash -p -f 0 a_s1600p.rom -sst -newbios"
"atiflash -p -f 0 a_s1600p.rom -atmel"
"atiflash -p -f 0 a_s1600p.rom -st"

You can't do anything wrong, if you know what you are doing. If the flash program says BIOS not erased the flash tool simply hasn't done it. If it says, flashed successfully it means that the flash tool have successfully updated the BIOS and the BIOS matches with the file on the floppy disk. But one time you should really pay attention, if the flash tool says anything else then those lines... In my case when I used a wrong command the output was asic not idle after write enable and flash failed.

In this case don't turn off your PC. If you do that, your card is dead, you have to send it to ASUS for a BIOS chip replacement. Also pay attention if your floppy disk isn't damaged. You can find it out if you after you've copied over the files BIOS file and flash tool, remove it access the floppy drive when it is empty and the message insert floppy appears. Then re-insert the floppy and finally copy those files and paste it anywhere else on the computer. If those files can be copied, the disk is okay.

For you info you have to access the blank floppy drive so that the computer clears the cache... If you don't do that, the computer will simply copy the files from it's cache without accessing the floppy disk. Good luck!

Re:ASUS AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/01/24 19:39 Thanks for your detailed help, while waiting I tried to do it myself using your other posts with one thing different, I downloaded a floppy disk modifier from a site that I read about here in ATI BIOS section. It only required one disk, bootable with the tool and BIOS. It was unable to flash the BIOS correctly. So next time I will try your way with Win98 bootable disk.

It's important to uninstall everything before the flashing, correct? Currently I am using WarCat's v7.4 drivers. Much better than ASUS ancient ones, but it's a shame to be slower because of software issues! Well thanks anyway, I'll be reporting back soon with the results. Next week I am going to install new mainboard, CPU and memory, so wish me good luck.

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/01/24 20:50 Thanks for your help. I have try all 6 different ATIFlash commands you have listed. But none work. I get always the message rom not erased. The only different is that I do not boot from floppy disk, because I have no floppy disk. I boot from an USB stick. But I think this could not be the reason that the flash doesn't work. Maybe you have any idea. Thanks for help...

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/01/24 23:49 Can you also try the below as commands and let us know what it gives? What we want to see is the standard ATIFlash commands but just with the parameter "-i" and after that just with the parameter "-ai". Since the flash tool v3.25 for you guys doesn't work, you could try to use the newest version, being v3.49 of that tool? I simply didn't recommend it, because it didn't work for me, with that card. Try to use the same commands...

Somehow it has to work, and I'll do the best to help you guys. And no, I don't think, that flashing with USB would cause such a problem... Oh, I forgot. Yes, the clock speeds are correct, which means you can use my file. And regarding the uninstallation of the drivers etc. Well, it's not that important since you can also remove this stuff using DriverCleaner or a similar program. But it's easier to remove everything, so yes.

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/01/25 01:16 Perfect, flashing completed. I downloaded the new ASUS drivers to see if they heard us and did something good for us but guess what, the same shitty screen with the grey vertical lines and multiple screens. Seems to me that they copied the official drivers from ATI, renamed the file and uploaded to the ASUS site. I took the opportunity and tried flashing one more time.

The bootable floppy disk made from my Windows XP system, same place you go to format the drive. Then I put ATIFlash v3.49 on it with the BIOS that Drago uploaded. And then I used the same commands the other time with no results, maybe the v3.49 solved the issue... I must see now if the Catalyst 7.11 driver from ATI will load right! Cya in a few minutes..

Well, it took me much longer than I expected, I had issues with Windows, some stuff was missing. Had to manually uninstall and install all frameworks from the beginning. Now that I'm finished the damn Catalyst Control Center won't start. I don't know why, it simply doesn't load not even when I run it manually. It's like it's empty, double click and nothing happens!
