GeForce 9600 GT, having black screen while playing games? - 2008/05/24 08:11 Hi all, I have a XFX GeForce 9600 GT card and whenever I play games such as World of Warcraft it always goes black screen and then repeated sound occurs. I have read a lot about this problem but I'm curious if any of you have a solution for it? I have tried underclocking the card but my computer normally lasts only 30-60min of playing time before crashing. I contacted XFX, and they were useless... I'm trying to get an RMA on it but am not having much luck. Is there a possible BIOS flash or driver upgrade that solve the problem? Thanks in advance for help.

Re:GeForce 9600 GT, having black screen while playing games? - 2008/05/24 10:37 Okay, well the blank screen is not always the graphics card that is having an issue really but rather the system as a whomle and that can be coming from different hardware and will generally only be spotted while gaming, which is quite processing intensive. So what I would propose is first two things that are the main cause of such behavior which is the power supply and the system memory. So which power supply do you have?

Re:GeForce 9600 GT, having black screen while playing games? - 2008/05/24 12:05 Thanks for the response. I believe it's specifically this graphics card. If you do a Google search GeForce 9600 GT black screen, a lot of people have this problem but seems no one so far has found a good solution. My power supply is a 460W, and I'm running a Core 2 Duo E8200 processor with 2GB ram, Windows Vista 32-bit and an Intel DG33FB mainboard.

Re:GeForce 9600 GT, having black screen while playing games? - 2008/05/24 13:56 Frankly speaking, if I may, we don't care what Google is saying and secondly you came here for our advise and not that of others. We have seen this blank screen with many cards and not only the GeForce 9600 GT, so don't think you are alone as I have had something as such with my Radeon HD 2600 XT and also with my GeForce 8800 GTX some time ago. Now thanks for the details but a power supply of 460W can be a good one or a bad one, so what is the brand and type? And we can tell you 80% of all issues with graphics cards is due to power supplies being of too poor quality...

Re:GeForce 9600 GT, having black screen while playing games? - 2008/05/24 18:33 I am using an Antec NeoPower. The power supply doesn't make much of a diff since my friend's one is crashing too and he's on a much higher power supply. Also it doesn't just give me a black screen, there's a repeating sound byte as well. This is apparently a well documented problem with this card and currently the only solution is underclocking.

Re:GeForce 9600 GT, having black screen while playing games? - 2008/05/25 07:03 Well going off that link, a BIOS update fixed a lot of the problems people were having. I would like to add that I have had a GeForce 9600 GT for over a month overclocked to 750MHz on the core without any issues. For reference, I am using BIOS version 62.94.0D.00.03 which is still older than the apparently problematic newer version 62.94.0D.00.04 and like I said, no problems.

Re:GeForce 9600 GT, having black screen while playing games? - 2008/05/25 10:15 Okay, its well known that most GeForce 9600 GT cards are having black screen problems. Just check in at EVGA forums, the thread has thousands of reads and replies. But I thought I would post my bit here for you all. My second system I have just built with an EVGA e-GeForce 9600 GT SSC edition and a nForce 750i EVGA motherboard and the Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor and expierenced the same problems but not anymore though.

It seems to be a possibility of two things, natively the card supports PCI Express 2.0, and does not like PCI Express 1.x motherboards. Number two which worked for me, I flashed my motherboard from version sz10 to the latest release of the sz17. I have not had a single glitch since and with a lot of gaming for hours. I hope this helps...

Re:GeForce 9600 GT, having black screen while playing games? - 2008/05/25 12:06 So it's a motherboard problem then, not a problem with the card. I have an old P965 motherboard with a PCI Express 1.0a slot and an older VGA and motherboard BIOS. I have all the factors needed for problems but I've had none. Lucky me I guess. It's about time something worked for me actually.

Re:GeForce 9600 GT, having black screen while playing games? - 2008/05/25 12:33 Ironically I was on the EVGA forums first than someone recommend this website. I don't have a PCI Express 2.0 mainboard, only a PCI Express 1.0 and the BIOS is already the latest version.

Re:GeForce 9600 GT, having black screen while playing games? - 2008/05/25 13:15 I'm sure I remember Mavke saying NVIDIA fixed the compatibility issues with PCI Express 1.x on the GeForce 9 series cards from the start, but don't quote me on that. Have you tried updating your graphics card BIOS? Someone on the EVGA forum reported that fixing this problem. I'd also try another power supply if you can, just to be sure it isn't messing up.
