Radeon HD 3870, and some BIOS voltage tweakings feasible? - 2008/05/20 18:48 Hi, I have a MSI Radeon HD 3870 OverClock edition which is water cooled and overclocked it at 904MHz core and 2600MHz memory clock speed. I know I can change the voltage in the BIOS, but will it really work? Or do I have to do the hardware modification? I know with the GeForce 7800 GT you could, but with ATI I don't know.

Re:Radeon HD 3870, and some BIOS voltage tweakings feasible? - 2008/05/20 19:27 As far as I know this is also possible with ATI, in fact the ATI cards did have that already since we saw it with NVIDIA but the results of the voltage increase via the BIOS did never make that much increase in overclocking ability, while with NVIDIA it did make quite a difference...

Re:Radeon HD 3870, and some BIOS voltage tweakings feasible? - 2008/05/20 22:14 Thanks for the information. I think I'm gonna try it and I'll let you know if I get somewhere. And also if I need some extra help with this going further.

Re:Radeon HD 3870, and some BIOS voltage tweakings feasible? - 2008/06/26 00:26 From my experience, voltage increases on ATI cards don't really help you get any further with the GPU, but previously unstable GPU clocks at the higher limits before any GPU modification do usually become stable. One example of this is my Radeon HD 3870, stock is 1.2V for 3D with max clock around 850MHz, then crashes. With 1.33V the core can handle 904MHz, but a good stable operation lays around 877MHz.

Re:Radeon HD 3870, and some BIOS voltage tweakings feasible? - 2008/06/26 18:51 That is indeed the case, for the ATI hardware we see not so major increases when changing the voltage unless you start also cooling the card even more and much better. But to get it more stable a big of extra voltage can do wonders.
