The main PCI Express slot functions like a normal 16x PCI Express slot for video cards, the second one is a 4x slot. Only that Gainward do not seem to be solved by using another BIOS. Well since you insists, I will just insist as well which mainboard do you have? Cause the main issue of this thread is about VIA chipsets and normally since you state you have an SLI mainboard it means you have an nForce chipset from NVIDIA and well then this is not fully related as NVIDIA stated very clearly that their chipset are fully supporting the GeForce 8800 GT's and then you need a mainboard BIOS update and not an updated BIOS for your graphics card.

Right now I have an ASUS P5KR Intel P35 chipset board. Previous to this I got a XFX nForce 680i board believing that the card would fully work on a NVIDIA chipset but turns out I was wrong. XFX themselves told me that there were serious compatibility issues with the latest NVIDIA cards that they were trying to resolve with NVIDIA. They told me to get some nForce 760i board. It was quite obvious at the time I was searching for answers that there was many people having issues with these GeForce 8800 GT cards with a wide range of boards.
I exchanged that board for the ASUS one. I chose the ASUS one because I am not particular interested in SLI and a friend had it with a GeForce 8800 GTS and it worked fine. I've tried BIOS updates, not one for any motherboards I have tried has fixed compatibility issues unfortunately. The results people on this forums have had with the same problem gave me hope that a solution is just around the corner from me. Either from people here or Gainward themselves as it appears it can be resolved with a BIOS update on the card.

So to conclude since you state that you have an Intel P35 chipset, you don't have an SLI mainboard. And yes you can say what you want but it all comes down to what you use and not what you had in the past. Now I am very certain the Gainward card as such works just fine on an Intel P35 chipset... So really have you got any way to try any other graphics card on that board, like your friends GeForce 8800 GTS?

The Gainward card does work on an Intel P35 chipset board, I don't doubt that. But there is many examples where it hasn't just like mine. When I was searching for a solution it was a problem many people were having with various other chipsets. At the same time there were many people reporting no problems at all.
I will also add that the ASUS firmware apparently made the card work for some people as well, no idea why not for all. I have a GeForce 7950 GX2 as well that works on the board but of course it is not a G92 card. I am not really in a position to borrow that persons GeForce 8800 GTS unfortunatly to test.

Well I am only commenting now on what is relevant, cause we are speaking about the PCI Express compatibily and the GeForce 8800 GT... And you are the first that I know with an Intel P35 chipset that has an issue with the GeForce 8800 GT graphics card. And no the brand of the video card doesn't matter as the standard version is all coming from the same production and only the sticker on the cooler is changing...
So on that aspect and also from the many messages I have exchanged previously about the G92 based cards, the PCI Express issue is mainly due to the mainboard manufacturers not sticking to the PCI Express specifications, especially VIA in that case. So in your case I would really think the solution should come more from ASUS then from NVIDIA, or even Gainward.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/01/28 03:32Okay, well then I will contact ASUS about this issue as well although I fear this board may be unsupported now. I am also interested in what Gainward have to say on the matter. Will keep you posted. Thanks...

Good, cause the solution should come from ASUS this time as far as I can see and as far as you have tried with possible Gen1 BIOS's. And Gainward will not really say much if NVIDIA doesn't come with an extra input, but they just plain and simple point to the PCI Express interface not being fully compatible with the specifications.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/01/28 22:30Of course! The memory timings. It is kind of obvious now, still I didn't think of it. Thank you, the original BIOS of the card is attached. Other BIOS's only work if the memory clock is set to 1220MHz or lower. A higher clock speed produces evil artifacts and crashes the system. Core clock and shader clock on the other hand are set to default values, and even a slight overclock is possible. So it is the memory timings.
Obviously, currently the graphics card uses the EVGA Gen1 BIOS from this thread with default values except memory clock. Since it is so easy to try different memory settings thanks to NiBiTor I will delve into it. The level of support here is amazing. Even more so if you compare it to the support of most of the card vendors and the chip maker.

At least for the memory clock and that should therefore impact the gaming performance and experience, due to a narrowed memory bandwidth throughput...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/01/29 01:20The score in 3DMark06 is 8700 points. The CPU is an Intel E2180 running at 3GHz. Actually I expected a bigger performance drop since the memory clock is only at two thirds of the default value. Not to forget the mainboard with the crappy VIA chipset...
