The new BIOS supposedly makes modifications to how the fan speeds up under load, but I haven't had a chance to test that yet. Thanks mate, for trying it out and providing your feedback. That is exactly what we expected. And about the fan speed that is exactly what we found out a bit before EVGA started updating and releasing their new BIOS's... And you can easily tweak that yourself on any BIOS for the GeForce 8800 GT with our NiBiTor program.

It never posted again. I am wondering if it is worth trying the Gen1 when I had Gen2? Having read your message, I just want to say one thing and that is don't mix Gen with Rev... Cause it has nothing at all to do with each other. The BIOS's on our downloads section are original BIOS and are all Gen2, but different versions and the Rev.xx indication is our own internal way of making the difference.
Now what you should try is the new BIOS from EVGA which comes with improved PCI Express Gen1 compatibility, and that should work on your Gainward card and solve the problem that you are facing. And no, we don't have such a BIOS yet from Gainward, only EVGA has released such a BIOS.

I emailed Gainward asking them if they had such a BIOS solution in the works but have not heard back from them for 3 days now. I will try the EVGA solution and let ya know how it worked for my Gainward card. Cheers...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/01/26 04:21Okay I tried the one that was on the 22nd page of this thread, which is the updated version of EVGA. Flashed fine but did not post in the 16x PCI Express port. Has anyone managed to get their Gainward card to work with this BIOS yet?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/01/26 09:00Well it did work for some others but then again you have another brand and maybe not the same mainboard, so what you can try as well is the updated Gen1 BIOS from XFX which is also very new and has the Gen1 setting...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/01/26 18:05I have been tinkering with my Gainward GeForce 8800 GT with 512MB for a few days and finally got it to run in Gen1 mode on a VIA chipset thanks to these forums. User uradox described a similar problem with this card so maybe this can be of help. But first a big thank you for this helpful und informative forums, for the tools like NiBiTor and the collection of BIOS's. And of course the amazing level of support from the friendly and competent Mavke. My Gainward GeForce 8800 GT came with the BIOS that is Rev.02.
It runs fine with the original BIOS but without Gen1 support of course. It does not run properly with any other BIOS, there is always lots of artifacts on screen, tried ASUS, EVGA, Gainward, etc. The only solution was to underclock the memory to less than 1220MHz. The EVGA Gen1 BIOS, edited with NiBiTor to a memory clock of 1200MHz now allows flawless operation in a mainboard with VIA chipset. The card could operate faster but at least it runs now. Thank you so much!

I would think this has to do with the memory timings as when you lower the memory clock speeds it does work without artifacts that means that Gainward is using different memory chips most likely with different timings... So it would be nice to know which timings are used with the original BIOS and also with this tweaked BIOS, and also the those that give artifacts as I think then we might be able to do something...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/01/27 11:42Hmm, the XFX did not work either. The thing is I don't get artifacts on my card, I don't get anything at all. It either works normally with its own BIOS in the 4x PCI Express slot or it doesn't work with any BIOS so far in the 16x PCI Express slot...

Well from what you are saying, that then has nothing at all to do with this thread really? Cause the card works but not in the right PCI Express slmot as it supposed to work. So can you start your own thread on this so we can re-focus and also details which mainboard and so on you got?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0? - 2008/01/27 12:27It's exactly this issue, I am just fortunate enough to have two PCI Express slots due to a SLI motherboard. The main PCI Express slot functions like a normal 16x PCI Express slot for video cards, the second one is a 4x slot. I read the thread before I posted about my problem and its the exact same problem everyone else had. Only that Gainward do not seem to be solved by using another BIOS.
