I was able to boot my XFX card in an older system with an ASUS A8N-E motherboard but obviously I would prefer to run it in my Core 2 Duo system.

Great thanks mate, now I will see as well what I can do with XFX and some others as this is becoming quite important and it seems NVIDIA has a bit forgotten users with chipset that are not NVIDIA nor Intel... But well somehow we are getting use to NVIDIA forgotting other chipset makers....

Only way to get it working is to start the computer without PCI Express power plugged in, card beeps, plug in the power while computer is running and press the computers reset button. After this procedure, the card works like a charm... Very strange.

So can you make sure to try with the proper Gen1 BIOS for the ASUS graphics card? Cause I know that this worked for users having the same issue. New Inno3D GeForce 8800 GT OC card is not compatible with the ASUS PV5-VM DH mATX motherboard running a VIA Chipset. Tested card in my ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe and had no problems at all. I will happily supply you the BIOS to the Inno3D card later in the week and am hopeful you can provide back as Gen1 to flash and re-test on quoted mainboard. I have emailed Inno3D tonight and will await a response from them. You must be creating a nice catalogue of GeForce 8800 GT BIOS now in Gen1 format! I hope you can help. Many thanks...
