Well I hate to comment on that but it is widely know that the XXX edition of the XFX GeForce 8800 GTX are not the best cards around to overclock. Most of those cards are already quite clocked at their limits and quite some reviews and user feedback do confirm that. Newer versions however do a bit better...

Hmm, I must've got lucky cause my XFX GeForce 8800 GTX (non XXX) works perfectly with both the XXX BIOS and now the new Ultra BIOS. Though I will say this, make sure you have a powerful power supply and good case airflow! My first power supply was a 600W (quad rail), but I got caught out as the actual current rating on the 12V line was border line. After changing this to a dual rail 850W that delivers 64A on the 12V line I haven't had an issue.
From experience, artifacts are nearly always heat related. How long before these artifacts occur? Also, try running with the case side panel off and stick a large fan nearby blowing into the case. I know it's not elegant, but it'll prove if it's a heat issue or not. If this stops the artifacts, work on improving your case cooling or consider switching to water cooling.

Re:NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GXU BIOS, modified Ultra for GTX use! - 2007/09/10 11:19Right on mate, artifacts are mainly cause by the heat and too much overclocking on the memory and that will lead to permanent damage of the memory chips. So yes, I would immediately clock the memory lower to avoid the damage and see to get a better cooling if that would be the cause.

Re:NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GXU BIOS, modified Ultra for GTX use! - 2007/09/11 02:47Well, if you consider an average load core temp of 63°C and ambient temp of 56-58°C too much heat, then I have no idea how to cool it down further using air. Before I tried that BIOS, I was running at 630MHz core and 1350MHz shader and 2000MHz memory. The Warboys BIOS ran it at 612MHz core, 1512MHz shader and 2000MHz memory. With this, I had light snow appear in game on certain textures. I don't know if artifacts was the correct term to use, and I know that there are two types of artifacts. The snow and the polygon mismatching.

Re:NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GXU BIOS, modified Ultra for GTX use! - 2007/09/11 04:02It looks like the shader clock is causing the problems. Maybe I just got lucky... Anyway, if your previous BIOS was working fine, then just switch back. To be honest, I can't see that you'd have got much of an improvement. About all you really get for running the Ultra BIOS is braging rights as the OS reports an Ultra! As for for your temps, I can't see anything wrong with them. These cards run hot! Mine often hits +75°C after a few hours running BattleField 2142.
Even at idle it averages 60-65°C... It'll be interesting to see how my system handles Summer as the ambient temp will go up and hence I may hit 80°C+. And yes you are right, you do have to try these things! It's why most us still use PC's and not switch over to consoles. I just can't help myself to tweak things...

Re:NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GXU BIOS, modified Ultra for GTX use! - 2007/09/11 13:52Same comment from my end lower the shader clock below 1450MHz and check again. Not all G80 chips run fine with a shader clock above 1500MHz, and that would then be causing artifacts. So if you can try that and see what it gives that would maybe cause the artifacts to stop.

Re:NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GXU BIOS, modified Ultra for GTX use! - 2008/05/05 12:08My Gigabyte GeForce 8800 GTX is able to reach 612/2160Mhz frequencies with 1512MHz shaders without any problems, so I decided to pair it with MSI GeForce 8800 Ultra. But I have a dilemma which BIOS I should use flashing my GTX, the original Ultra BIOS or GXU BIOS with modified timings? Which BIOS can provide better memory overclocking potencial? In my opinion, original Ultra BIOS suits better due to a bit relaxed memory timings, or am I wrong?

Re:NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GXU BIOS, modified Ultra for GTX use! - 2008/05/05 19:13If you want to use both card in SLI mode, then you need to make sure these have the same BIOS to work in the best conditions. So I would opt to try the Ultra BIOS first on both card.
