GeForce 8800 GTS, changing device ID to GeForce 9800 GTX? - 2008/04/15 11:08 Hello everyone, I used NiBiTor to simpy change the device ID of my GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB from 0600 to 0612. Flash worked, but the card still gets recognized as device ID 0600 in GPU-Z and the NVIDIA drivers won't take the card as a GeForce 9800 GTX as well. I used nvFlash to check and the util says 0612 has been flashed onto the card. How come it still doesn't get recognized as 0612 in Windows? Did I need to chance board ID and/or subvendor ID as well?

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS, changing device ID to GeForce 9800 GTX? - 2008/04/15 11:47 I thought this card has two BIOS's, or is that just the GeForce 9800 GX2? Maybe I am just mixing up the card here, so don't mind that.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS, changing device ID to GeForce 9800 GTX? - 2008/04/15 16:15 I came up with the idea that I should HEX edit my GeForce 8800 GTS BIOS to change the value 03930000 to 03920001 and with NiBiTor the device ID from 0600 to 0612. Will that work or is HEX editing the BIOS dangerous?

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS, changing device ID to GeForce 9800 GTX? - 2008/04/16 02:09 If you HEX edit the BIOS you must make sure that you correct the checksum or the BIOS flash may fail or you won't be able to install drivers.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS, changing device ID to GeForce 9800 GTX? - 2008/04/16 13:02 Good idea, how can I do that? Any programs available, or some specific calculation that you can do manually to get to the correct checksum?

Yes you can just use NiBiTor to correct the checksum after you did perform the HEX edit, you just load your modified BIOS and you save it again with NiBiTor and the checksum will be corrected. Now take into account that you need to make sure to change all parameters like device ID, board ID, etc from the values of the GeForce 8800 GTS to the GeForce 9800 GTX before this will work and you frankly won't gain anything from it, and you do it at your own risk.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS, changing device ID to GeForce 9800 GTX? - 2008/04/17 10:53 Well you night not gain anything, but at least you can install latest drivers without modding these. Please keep us posted on the results...

So I do need to change my board ID as well? Oh then I would need some more advice because when I change it from 2301 to B623 and NiBiTor shows weird stuff under product like unreadable items instead of G92 board. Is this just a display bug of NiBiTor? The strange thing is that when I change board ID with GeForce 9800 GTX BIOS it shows simply a GeForce 9800 GTX instead of these cryptic characters.

Well there might come the time where NVIDIA gives the GeForce 9800 GTX a little driver based performance boost which does not apply on a GeForce 8800 GTS based G92 cards. And I'm just curious to get this working.

Sorry but changing the ".inf" to allow the new drivers to also work on the GeForce 8800 GTS will take only 5 seconds by adding two lines. And for the comment you made, keep on dreaming as that is something that is just not going to happen. If they do that NVIDIA will be killing their own product line and you will see how many review websites would start complaining about such a trick, cause just a boast for one card it not possible, it would affect all card based on similar technology.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS, changing device ID to GeForce 9800 GTX? - 2008/04/18 07:47 Well NVIDIA is well known for less than ethical tactics regarding performance with their drivers, as we have seen in the past.
