I've got a XFX GeForce 8800 GT XXX Alpha Dog edition which I am burning to overclock. I have only 2 concerns, the CPU is a Pentium D 3.0GHz, so I'm thinking I should fix that bottleneck first by upgrading to Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad, else I might not see the full effect of the overclock.
Yes, indeed your processor is not really a good deal to benifit a lot of the overclocking of a GeForce 8800 GT, so going for at least a good Core 2 Duo would be adviced. So see what you can get and go for it...

I only have standard cooling and I'm scared that overclocking will cause excessive heat resulting in damage. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
The cooling should not be an issue as long as you tweak the BIOS of the graphics card as well a bit so that the fan will spin up a bit sooner and cool the card a bit better. And that is also what most are doing and it is not giving any issues really.

And do you have any update for us? Just wondering if you have been able to hit 800MHz or not as sounds very exciting. If you can let us know your update and this that would be great.
Sorry, I talked myself out of voltage modding it. I didn't want to be possibly stuck without of a card during the new years and also afraid that if I burned the card up, I wouldn't get another one that clocked so nicely. Right now all my games are playing perfectly smooth with no stability problems, but if I decide to try the voltage modding in the future, I will definitely post back here...

Okay mate, point taken. Although as many have already done this I don't see why you would be facing issues. But also those that have cards that overclock very well at default voltage don't see much increase when they apply the voltage update on the BIOS. So yes you can doubt a bit with such a good card if it is really worth the effort.

Re:Who is owning a GeForce 8800 GT, and ready for tweaking? - 2008/01/12 22:24 Hi, just wondering if there any BIOS tweaks for the ASUS Extreme N8800 GT 512MB? I run it now on 700/2000MHz with the shaders at 1725MHz. I've seen some people doing 800/2200MHz with the shaders at 1800MHz, is that possible for me? This is my original BIOS file... Thanks.
ASUS Extreme N8800 GT 512MB Edition
- Bus Type : PCI Express
- Memory : 512MB
File Attachment:
File name: asus-en8800gt-Xspeed.rom
File size:58880 bytes

Well maybe, but you need to know not all cards are equal so even if others can do 800MHz it might not be the case for you. But what those others might have done, is that they have changed the voltage from 1.05V which is the default to 1.10V in the BIOS via NiBiTor. This you can do by just selecting 1.10V in the Extra entry and then save the BIOS and flash. Then you use ATITool to find max core and max memory speed possible.

Re:Who is owning a GeForce 8800 GT, and ready for tweaking? - 2008/01/29 08:21 Thanks for your reply. I need to run something by you quickly... I'm cosidering flashing a BIOS from the ASUS GeForce 8800 GT TOP on to my XFX GeForce 8800 GT XXX Edition. Do you think I'll get away with this? I'm really quite scared of frying my card. Your input is highly valued.

ASUS GeForce 8800 GT TOP BIOS Specifications...
- Core Clock : 700MHz
- Memory Clock : 2000MHz
- Shader Clock : 1750MHz
- Voltage : 1.10V

XFX GeForce 8800 GT XXX BIOS Specifications...
- Core Clock : 670MHz
- Mem Clock : 1950MHz
- Shader Clock : 1650MHz
- Voltage : 1.05V

Well the safest way is to tweak your own original XFX BIOS towards the settings of the TOP edition BIOS. Cause it doesn't make much sense to use the ASUS BIOS when you can use NiBiTor to just set your BIOS to the same values as that BIOS and then flash your card with that tweaked BIOS.

Re:Who is owning a GeForce 8800 GT, and ready for tweaking? - 2008/02/04 07:48 Okay thanks of the explaining and advice on what is the best way. And so logic prevails once more... Thanks and will take this into account.

Re:Who is owning a GeForce 8800 GT, and ready for tweaking? - 2008/02/11 23:44 Hi, just wondering is it possible to use ASUS TOP BIOS of the GeForce 8800 GT on a standard ASUS Extreme N8800 GT? Will it change the GPU voltage? Cause I tried via NiBiTor really it won't change anything. I run my card stable at 700/2016MHz with 1750MHz shader clock, so any idea? Thanks again.

Re:Who is owning a GeForce 8800 GT, and ready for tweaking? - 2008/02/13 14:35 Well your could use the TOP version BIOS, and that should just work fine. The BIOS normally doesn't increase the voltage as the TOP clocks can be run with the standard voltage for the GeForce 8800 GT...
