GeForce 8800 GT and GTS, both 512MB and up for SLI mode? - 2008/03/04 02:25 Hi all, fry's has an uber sweet deal right now on BFG GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB but I already have an EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT 512MB. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether it's possible, via some kind of BIOS modification, to get these two cards working in SLI mode if I was to buy the GTS. Might it be as simple as flashing the GTS with a GT BIOS, or?

I'm hoping to get a for sure kinda answer, like someone who's personally tried everything to make it work, and couldn't, or hopefully could. I know the performance would be just like two GeForce 8800 GT', and I understand it may seem kinda wasteful of the GTS power, but heck where am I gonna find an overclocked GeForce 8800 GT with upgraded cooling for $229 anyway? Who cares about a little waste when it's at that price? Thanks for your input...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT and GTS, both 512MB and up for SLI mode? - 2008/03/04 07:16 I think it might work as both cards have same chipset and memory size although they have different shader count, Mavke might know for sure. Have nearly the same question for the GeForce 8800 Ultra and GeForce 8800 GT, although I do not think it will work as those two have different chipsets meaning G80 and G92, and will it still work? By the way, the cards are the EVGA e-GeForce 8800 Ultra Black Pearl and the EVGA e-GeForce 8800 SuperClocked... Next problem is that it does not have equal memory size.

I have read before that it needs same GPU, so G92 in this case and same memory, but that clock speed does not have to be the same. In example, it will down clock the faster card to the other card. However, there might be some software driver limiting this. You may have to rebrand the GeForce 8800 GT to the GTS, but as said the GTS has more stream processors and it has higher clock speeds. It also has two more capacitors, so it might have a better longtivity for higher clocks due to this factor.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT and GTS, both 512MB and up for SLI mode? - 2008/03/05 22:54 Mmm, I am not certain at all and I have not been able to test it either so I can't really advice that much. But what does work with different cards, meaning manufacturer and different memory but same GPU is that it needs the same BIOS to work well with SLI and is what I have tried and done in the past using a GeForce 7950 GT standard and a for more advanced pre-overclo ked GeForce 7950 GT. And it also worked with the GeForce 7900 GTX and GTO, when using the same BIOS... So it might work but not certain at all...
