GeForce 7900 GTX, and getting bad image and Vista issues? - 2008/03/03 16:55 Hi, I have a problem with my EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GTX card it give me artifacts, looking in internet I get the NiBiTor v3.8 program, I extract the original BIOS and flash a modded one with lower frequencies. In Windows XP it works fine but in Windows Vista 64-bit its load fine the login screen but when display the desktop the screen get disturbed and I can't see anything. It looks like the flash is okay because the computer does not freeze and works.

I used a BIOS of the EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GT without frequencies modifications, stock BIOS and it works normally. In other words I can't use a modified BIOS in Vista 64-bit because my screen gets disturb. Thanks...

Re:GeForce 7900 GTX, and getting bad image and Vista issues? - 2008/03/03 19:26 Well the post have been removed from the feedback thread on NiBiTor v3.8, as it has nothing to do with the program itself but all with the issues between the GeForce 7900 series and Vista. It is know that Vista doesn't work so good with the GeForce 7900 series and we have seen that some brands brought out some BIOS update to fix this, however we only saw such a fix for the GT version.

Re:GeForce 7900 GTX, and getting bad image and Vista issues? - 2008/03/05 03:15 Okay going with the specifications, my card by default runs on 650/1600MHz and a 50MHz delta and it gives artifact at default stock frequencies. I downclocked on my way, like 600/1500Mhz and keeping the delta and that was the bug, I don't know if in the another series can set the frequencies that you want but in my case to down it but percentage wise. So the same percentage in all the frequencies... If I overclock the down clocked card in differents ways per frequency the issue appear in Vista and Windows XP.

Example to downclock 650MHz of core to 600MHz the percentage of down clock is approx 8%, then 600MHz of core is at 92% of 100%. You must apply the same percentage to all memory frequencies and delta. The idea I looked in a notice that the GeForce 9600 GT get percentually overclocked when you overclock the frequency of the PCI Express bus. My final downclock is 625/1530MHz and 48MHz shader, which is about 96%. Now no artifacts with ATITool in 8 hours of scan.

I hope this info works in all video cards and helps another gamer to eliminate the artifacts on his damaged video card by the factory default overclock like some XFX GeForce 8800 GT. My friend has the problem, and I want help him but he scream and scare the BIOS flashing. I am happy I only lost 3 frames rates in total. Thanks for this great site!

Re:GeForce 7900 GTX, and getting bad image and Vista issues? - 2008/03/05 22:29 Such behavior might work on your GeForce 7900 GTX, but won't be the same for all cards really, not for even all GeForce 7900 GTX's. And what your friend concerns if he has a XFX GeForce 8800 GT with artifact issues at default clock speed set by XFX then you should do just one thing, you contact XFX and ask an RMA. This is a new card and XFX has great warranty in place to replace any faulty card...

Re:GeForce 7900 GTX, and getting bad image and Vista issues? - 2008/03/06 02:01 Lol, very special issue. My friend contacted the support of XFX they recognize the problems in the card and send him a new BIOS release. He flashed it and only increase the fan speed extending the time that artifacts apear though doesn't fix the problem at all, like my case. The RMA is an expensive choice its cost the 40% of the total card value around $90, because we live in Costa Rica, we have to pay the send and the return of the card. Thanks for the recommendations!

Re:GeForce 7900 GTX, and getting bad image and Vista issues? - 2008/05/28 19:11 A bit late, but can you share thet newer BIOS from XFX so we can have a look it? Maybe we can somehow see if we can tweak a bit the fan speed ourselves. If else what I would do is downclock the card a bit to make sure it doesn't heat up that high and can remain working without artifacts. Yeah RMA is payable, unless you can persuade XFX to pay for the return.
