Flashing a GeForce 8800 GT to SSC speeds, is it possible? - 2008/02/20 15:47Hello. I'm new to these forums, though I've been reading the reviews and BIOS updates of this site for quite a while. I'm here because I'd like to know if it's possible to update a normal, default GeForce 8800 GT to a SSC BIOS, so I can get SSC speeds. Has anyone done it? Is it safe? Those cards share same components quality?
If it's possible, buying that and the new Akimbo cooler would be a better choice than a SSC. Please, help me. I'm a click away from buying the SSC model, since the Akimbo isn't available yet...

Re:Flashing a GeForce 8800 GT to SSC speeds, is it possible? - 2008/02/20 20:45Well good to see you made it to our forums, and I think that we have proven it already several times that most card can be overclocked to higher speeds so it is very likely that your standard GeForce 8800 GT can make the SSC clock speeds but you have to try it first. So use ATITool, RivaTuner or PowerStrip to overclock your and see if you can reach the SSC speeds and can still play games. If so you can try to flash the graphics card with the SSC BIOS version.

Sometimes I know or guess I could do something, but I get scared of getting bad results. Well, I bought the plain vanilla EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT and I'm just waiting for it to arrive. A bit off topic, but do you have any references to any good RAM heatsinks? This EVGA dual slot cooler comes also with a backplate heatsink, but no RAM heatsinks, oh and also any good thermal paste?

Re:Flashing a GeForce 8800 GT to SSC speeds, is it possible? - 2008/02/21 18:46The best thermal paste in my opinion Arctic Silver 5. Best video RAM heatsinks are the Swiftech MC14 BGA heatsinks. By the way, on a regular EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT I used a Zalman VF900 with thermal paste and those Swiftech MC14 BGA heatsinks to get an overclock of 740/2200MHz with a shader clock set at 1850MHz, with no changes on the voltage. So the SSC speeds after upgraded cooling should be easy.

Which is actually normal as it is newer, and you can read a full review of our testing on this Arctic Cooling MX-2 compound and comparison as well to Arctic Silver 5. Do you think I can use those RAM heatsinks with the Akimbo dual slot cooler? I mean, I hope there isn't any interference between each other... I've been reading they've got an awful adhesive.

Yeah that Sunbeam Tuniq TX-2 in not so bad but the Arctic Cooling MX-2 is just better.

And since we have done extensive testing both with CPU and GPU for a longer period to see the evolution after some days we can really say the MX-2 compound is better in the end...

Well, the only bad comment I read about the Tuniq TX-2 was its longevity. Many people already knew about the Arctic Cooling MX-2 longevity, but they were still testing the Tuniq TX-2. Seriously, I'm now starting to think in buying the Arctic Cooling MX-2 and do the tests myself. Anyways, it seems it'll be almost 10 days before I get my video card and cooler.
