GeForce 7600 GT and getting artifacts on system startup? - 2008/02/02 16:38 Hi guys, I have a problem with graphics cards, as I have two ASUS GeForce 7600 GT's. Was playing online game when at some point it disconnected me from. In Windows display became stretched in different directions. Reset-ed the PC, it didn't help, some wierd vertical lines showed up in equal distances all over the screen. Windows didn't fired up, well only in safe mode and surprisely without any glitches on the display.

Sometimes Windows starts as expected but only for a while, till we tried to play games again then appeared a blue screen and PC reset. It happens to two graphics cards on two different PC's. Google says that the video memory is fried, but how? Game is not really a stressing one. Graphics there didn't improve for past 3-4 years. Any ideas?

Re:GeForce 7600 GT and getting artifacts on system startup? - 2008/02/03 11:23 Well, as you found some info with Google by searching we can only confirm what you have found. The artifacts are generally coming from memory that is going bad. That means not that it is fried, but could be and that it doesn't matter if it is stressing game or not. So my best guess is that you just have bad luck that both cards have this problem but I do think you got some faulty memory on these cards causing the artifacts.

How it can come? Well thatis hard to say as it happens sometimes very fast after usage of a card and then it could just have been a bad chip that slipped through the checks but after some time, months, years it can happen as well and that would be mainly due to heat that not so good chips are degrading faster than expected and in the end are failing, which is exactly what you are experiencing...

Re:GeForce 7600 GT and getting artifacts on system startup? - 2008/02/03 18:41 Thanks for the fast response. Sounds like a bad luck, isn't it? Two cards were working fine for over a year, then suddenly broke. Now when I rethink what happens for past couple of weeks is, we installed new drivers, genuine NVIDIA and then ASUS branded 169.25. We started playing that new game. First card which broke was on my PC, I recall borrowing one from my girlfriends PC for couple of days.

After that I've returned it. It still working in same day then it broke at the evening. My second though is maybe a virus or incompatibility with the chipset which in certain circumstances burns graphic cards? Sorry if I sound paranoid but with my hardware experience, I still can't understand what happened. Moreover, I've bought a GeForce 8800 GT which runs on my PC and I'm kinda scarred to run the game again in case whole store will repeat itself.

Re:GeForce 7600 GT and getting artifacts on system startup? - 2008/02/04 19:22 Well it sounds like bad luck indeed. But that doesn't mean anything else is bad on your PC or if you have virus. As long as I am in the PC business the only thing I have seen is a very old virus that could crew up a hard disk but that is it. So I don't believe at all in the virus stuff breaking a video card. And your GeForce 8800 GT should work just fine...

Re:GeForce 7600 GT and getting artifacts on system startup? - 2008/02/05 23:24 Okay, thanks for your view on this and I do hope so that this is it really as then I will be able to enjoy my GeForce 8800 GT. Thanks for your help Mavke!
