Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/05/14 01:33 Hi, I know this might be asking a lot, but could you guys compile a post with step by step instructions on how to complete this operation? I got this crap card because an NVIDIA card I had from ASUS went boom and they couldn't repair or replace it. Games have been running like utter crap lately because of the outdated driver. I've downloaded the BIOS that was successful and both ATIWinFlash and ATIFlash, but I haven't tried to use either yet because I am nervous.

I'm nearly professional level with PC hardware and software, but this level of troubleshooting is further that I have gone before. I do not have a floppy drive on this system, is there any way to use the DOS util without a floppy drive in case the ATIWinFlash version doesn't work? Like a bootable CD or USB drive? Thanks for getting such a great thread going for us unlucky folks that happened to get this card and can't afford or find another one.

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/05/19 20:17 There is already a thread with all the information you need. If you have further questions feel free to ask here... One small addition though, most of the people had only luck to flash the card using ATIFlash v3.25. I'd try with that version and only if that doesn't work, I'd use the highest version available of the DOS flash tool. Don't ever use ATIWinFlash. How you boot into DOS mode it's totally up to you. Because you don't have a floppy drive and you're not able to boot via USB, you should create a bootable CD.

To be sure put every version of ATIFlash from version 3.25 up to the newest available and also the BIOS file. I've booted with the Windows Millennium floppy, but you can also use Windows 98 boot files to create the bootable CD. Much easier would be to use an old hard disk, format it and make it bootable and use Windows 98 files to boot into DOS. Then you are also able to make a backup of your current BIOS which you can't with a CD.

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/05/29 00:15 Hello, I flashed the BIOS of my ASUS Radeon X1650 PRO mainly because I wanted OpenGL support in Linux. But it didn't work and now I'm having trouble restoring my cards BIOS to its original state. I searched the web for a BIOS that matches my card but didn't find any and I also tried to use the BIOS in the first post of this thread but it doesn't really work. I think I may have done a mistake while flashing back to the original BIOS and now, although DirectX works and I can play games in 3D, the fps is kinda lower, and if I try to play or use OpenGL I either get a blue screen, a system hang or very bad performance from my computer after I close the OpenGL application.

Also now I'm having real troubles with my system stability. Unfortunately I can't say what commands I did use to reflash my card because I can't remember. Could someone please give me a good BIOS with instructions on how to reflash my card? I know I won't be able to use it with OpenGL under linux which is a big problem for me but still for the time beeing I can't afford another card. Thank you for your help and sorry for my bad English.

I am just going to add one comment as too many persons just believe a BIOS flash will solve it all and that is not true. A lot of things are not controlled by the BIOS and OpenGL is one of those. All the Radeon cards support OpenGL and if it doesn't work in Linux it is because Linux doesn't have th correct support for the card, and a BIOS flash will not make much a a change to that...

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/05/29 17:00 I know that the BIOS doesn’t control OpenGL, however this is a board with ATI chipset, so it should work if you can get the drivers from ATI to recognize the board. One of the ways to do that is flash de video BIOS so that it identifies the board as one that is recognized by the ATI drivers. Of course I flashed with the wrong BIOS and that’s why now I just wanted to know if I can restore the board and how. Thanks for reply.

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/05/29 19:38 Well you did it the hard way which can indeed lead to issues as the ATI BIOS's are not the same for all the cards even with the same chipset. The easy way was to add the correct ID of the graphics card in the driver file whcih controls the recognition of the graphics card. Well I hope someone can help you with the BIOS, though if you have the original BIOS you could try to first erase the EEPROM and than to reflash with the original BIOS...

Re:ASUS Extreme AX1650 PRO AGP, facing problem with drivers? - 2008/05/29 21:06 Unfortunately I don't have it and can't find it anywhere... Would have tried adding the cards ID to the driver, but I was told that it's closed source so it wouldn't be possible.

Hehe, well that source is wrong, and actually we have got that feedback already a lot so I hope someone will finally make it clear that it is just not true. Just like the ForceWare drivers, you can add delete card ID's also to the Catalyst drivers, which is actually done by the manufacturers as well and we have already done it in the past. So really that source is just unreliable.
