Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2008/01/19 09:55 Mavke wrote:
But well I wouldn't really delay much more if they will replace your 256MB version for a 512MB, then just go for it... I guess they offer this with no or a small cost?
No, they want me to try and get the retailer to swap the card for a 512MB and pay the extra for the difference. So that is not just a nice deal that they offered but rather find out yourself with your shop on what they can do and see if they are willing to swap it...

And gotten back, thanks for your message, there should be a BIOS available soon and we will let you know when we have one available. This shows they know about the problem and are working on a BIOS, strange that hey would say there cannot be one...
That's basically the message I got, then about 4 days later they said it was a no go. It looks like we're being dealt with by different people who don't communicate, or it's possible your message was sent before they knew it couldn't be done. I haven't had a reply as to why it's impossible yet.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2008/01/19 10:12 Well I would then just wait, cause if EVGA can bring out new BIOS's for their e-GeForce 8800 GT and GTS series based upon the G92 with 512MB memory then I somehow think that EVGA who has a 256MB version as well could be coming with an e-GeForce 8800 GT 256MB update as well which lists as update the improved PCI Express compatibility for Gen1 mainboards...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2008/01/21 11:22 Hi, I also have MSI GeForce 8800 GT OC (v117) edition and a ASRock mainboard. Now running fine with the EVGA Gen1 BIOS, thank you all. I am still waiting on MSI sending me a orginal Gen1 BIOS. Maybe I misunderstood user decalpha above but his BIOS looks more like a non pre-overclocked Gen2 BIOS. Attacthed is the OC BIOS, but also Gen2 for your collection.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2008/01/22 12:30 I got a reply from XFX regarding why they can't change a 256MB BIOS... To be honest, I am not really sure, we are not party to certain information regarding design and firmware implementation, but best to contact your supplier in this case, or consider a mainboard upgrade, a move something we would recommend in any case to get the best out of the modern range of cards. So there's no explanation at all...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2008/01/22 20:41 Hi have been having trouble with my MSI P35D3 mainboard and my PNY GeForce 8800 GT card. The only way I can post is to clear the CMOS and then load defaults by hitting F2. I can't reboot or make any BIOS changes. I have already updated the mainboard BIOS. I have replaced the mainboard and the GeForce 8800 GT. I am in contact with MSI, but they haven't been much help. I noticed today on Newegg that my board is PCI Express 1.0a compliant. I'm not sure this is the problem, since I haven't heard of anyone with that problem being able to post, so should I try to change the video card BIOS?

That is not really an explanation indeed, but well we might never get to the bottom unless we somehow find a way ourselves. But since we have currently no new Gen1 with the corresponding same Gen2 BIOS it is very hard to get to the bottom of this... So really we should need the Gen1 and Gen2 BIOS of the same version somehow.

Well I would indeed try a Gen1 BIOS or maybe even one of the newer EVGA BIOS's that have the improved PCI Express compatibility as a fix. Cause it does sound like you are facing similar issues as the VIA chipset owners.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2008/01/24 23:35 I have Digital Alliance GeForce 8800 GT with same problem with VIA chipset. The only Gen1 BIOS that compatible is the NVIDIA BIOS that I had to change with NiBiTor, unfortunately it didn't work with memory default speed and I have to down clock to 1586MHz to make it stable or the screen will be artifacting and hangs. Any way to fix this?

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2008/01/24 23:37 I can confirm that the new BIOS from EVGA on my standard GeForce 8800 GT allowed me boot to Windows XP on an ASRock 775Dual-VSTA motherboard. The new BIOS supposedly makes modifications to how the fan speeds up under load, but I haven't had a chance to test that yet. Here's the blurb from a thread on the EVGA forums...

We have released a new BIOS for the EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT's, this new update ramps the fan speed up quicker, and more gradually as the temperature increases. This update can lower the GPU operating temperature by about 10°C under load. In addition, this BIOS also improves compatibility with some PCI Express Gen1 motherboards.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2008/01/25 09:54 Hi guys. I have the same problem everyone else here seems to have. My card is a Gainward BLISS 8800 GT. My BIOS on my card is what is Rev.02 on this webpage. I tried flashing the ASUS Gen1 but my system did not post. Tried the Gainward BLISS 8800 GT Rev.03 and the system posted! I booted into Vista and checked with GPU-Z and found PCI Express was running at 8x. I would have been happy to have the PCI Express run at that speed but when I turned the PC off to screw everything in thinking it was final. It never posted again. I am wondering if it is worth trying the Gen1 when I had Gen2?
