Re:GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB, and any Gen1 G92 BIOS available? - 2008/01/02 09:14 oligo wrote:
You mentioned earlier that you wouldn't risk flashing a GeForce 8800 GT Gen1 BIOS on my GTS. What issues could I face. I thought I would just be able to flash the orignal BIOS back if things don't work out? So far no BIOS or answer from Gainward yet!
Well you can face somehow a blank screen or grabbled display. So if you try the flash with a Gen1 BIOS for a GeForce 8800 GT you need to take into account that you might need to do a blind flash, so prepare yourself for that. Now just so you know, Gainward will not be able to fix this only the mainboard manufacturer or NVIDIA. And since you know that NVIDIA is putting the action on the mainboard you should also contact them to fix it... By the way the Gainward office was closed as well for some days, due to the recent holidays.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB, and any Gen1 G92 BIOS available? - 2008/01/07 22:40 Just to update everyone with this issue. I have been trying with both Gainward and ASRock support. Gainward has been trying to be helpful, but unfortunately has not been able to shed any more light on the situation than has already been reported in the forums. As of yet no modified BIOS has been forth coming. I finally got a email back from ASRock after 4 weeks. The reply is as follows...

We are sorry this problem can not be solved by the motherboard BIOS. It has to be use a PCI Express 1.0 BIOS. Please kindly contact Gainward for the special graphics card BIOS. Thanks for your understanding. So have got no further is resolving this problem. I really hope another video card manufacturer can issue a working new BIOS that does have the Gen1 support active.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB, and any Gen1 G92 BIOS available? - 2008/01/08 09:02 Well as mentioned before it is not Gainward that will make the BIOS, nor will XFX make it really. But it will be NVIDIA that will have to provide such a BIOS and so far the news is that NVIDIA is stating that their cards are fully PCI Express 2.0 and that means fully compatible with the lower version as well. But ASRock is not really fully in line with the PCI Express 1.0 specifications and that is causing all the issues. Now since XFX has shown that they would check a newer BIOS out and we know they have close relations with NVIDIA, maybe they can just get something done... But we are all waiting patiently.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB, and any Gen1 G92 BIOS available? - 2008/01/08 13:05 And finally for some good news. Just been emailed from the Gainward support person. He is going to try to modified my BIOS for me! Yeah. My card will finally be upgraded from a $500 paper weight into a functioning video card. Do you know of any other threads here or elsewhere on the web that are dealing with the GeForce 8800 GTS Gen1 BIOS issue so I can tract what progress is being made there? Where is the thread that is deal with XFX trying to modify the GTS BIOS?

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB, and any Gen1 G92 BIOS available? - 2008/01/08 18:24 Well I don't really follow other forums as that would be killing this one and then I can justy close up the website... So I have no clue. And the other thread is not really related to the GTS but to the newer GeForce 8800 GT BIOS's and those will follow the same logic as for the GTS, so if one of them is getting us a BIOS that would be Gen1 then we will be able to reproduce for the GT and GTS...

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB, and any Gen1 G92 BIOS available? - 2008/01/19 00:49 And now for the bad news. Gainward can't do it and have suggested buying a new motherboard, ASRock also said they can't make a BIOS to fix the problem. New motherboard time for me.

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB, and any Gen1 G92 BIOS available? - 2008/01/19 01:56 I've been checking the EVGA forums and EVGA has just released a BIOS update for their G92 based e-GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB with the BIOS version listed as 62.92.25.00.02. The update reason for this BIO Sis listed as improves compatibility with certain PCI Express Gen1 motherboards. So hopefully this will resolve the ASRock 4Core-VSTA issues. I have not tried this BIOS yet but am very keen to. Hope this helps people like me who have a $500 paperweight sitting on the desk due to motherboard incompatibility.

Please post you experiences with this BIOS on this thread, so that everyone can benefit. The extracted program is a Windows based nvFlash v5.58 program. I would prefer to use the DOS based version. As my card is a G92 based Gainward GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB video card and the program may not flash onto my card, but with the DOS version I can force the BIOS flash onto my card. Are you able to extract the BIOS and it here so that I can try to use it?

Re:GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB, and any Gen1 G92 BIOS available? - 2008/01/19 10:04 Well first of all your new thread you started was just not needed as you had already one that you could use as it is all about the same thing, the PCI Express compatibility for some mainboards. Well as requested the BIOS is now extracted and you can download as such and flash your card with it. Once done let us know if that works fine, thanks.
