EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO edition, what about some tweak? - 2008/01/17 04:29 I have two cards I would like to know if they can perform better. I have read about the BIOS flashing on the cards, what are the limits? There are post on forums about people flashing a GeForce 7900 GS into a GeForce 7900 GT. I have an EVGA eGe-Force 7900 GS KO 256MB PCI Express card that I would like to know what I can do with it as far as flashing. Can I turn it into a GeForce 7900 GT?

I also have a e-GeForce 6600 GT 128MB AGP from EVGA. What can I do with that as far as performance increase. I am only looking for worthwhile performance jumps, not steps/hops jumps. I don't want to risk my cards for 100-500 more 3DMarks or 5 extra frame rates. Thanks a lot...

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO edition, what about some tweak? - 2008/01/17 17:52 Well first of all with your e-GeForce 6600 GT it depends a lot on the system as well, cause that is an older card and also about the games you are playing. If you overclock the card to what would be it's maximum using ATITool you can then see if it has enough impact by running one of your favorite games or 3DMark benchmarks. But I doubt very much with 3DMark06 that you will gain much more then 400-500 marks, the card is just not up to that at all.

Secondly flashing a GeForce 7900 GS to a GT is just useless. It works yes, but what it does is simple increasing the clock speeds and that you can do best first via software and if that makes the difference for you and it is enough the increase in performance you modify your original BIOS with those higher clocks and you flash the card. That is always better then just flashing whatever to the card...

Well we all have to start somewhere so this is really a good start and you can learn a lot on what it is all about overclocking a graphics card and the performance gains that can be had. You just have to see how hard you want some extra performance and frame rates.

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO edition, what about some tweak? - 2008/01/23 00:35 Okay, well. My GeForce 6600 GT was on RMA. They sent me back a GeForce 7800 GS 256MB. Where can I get a good solid driver for it, or is the manufactures the best? Thanks.

Euh, just get the latest driver from NVIDIA, that is actually the best as the drivers from a manufacturer are just those drivers in a different installer... Frankly we always use the driovers from NVIDIA directly and don't even bother with the one of the manufacturers as it is generally just the same.

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO edition, what about some tweak? - 2008/01/24 04:41 Okay, cool. I have a noob question I am sure. I hope it won't crash before I'm done posting this. This card the GeForce 7800 GS AGP needs to have a molex connection in it. It requires 18A on the 12V rail I believe, with a 350W power supply. Why, oh why, does this card start to artifact in both 2D and 3D. I did overclock it once with RivaTuner, but only like 10MHz and it artifact and shut down. I have a 420W power supply with 20A on the 12V rail, it is fairly new, so it should be pushing the right numbers.

This is also the same problem I have had with the GeForce 6600 GT. My board is a Fujitsu Siemens D1675, with a Celeron 2.7GHz. I changed the AGP aperture size to 256MB with slight improvement. I thing my board just hates all things that require extra power. My Volari V3 128MB card works fine, save the occasional bluer screens and not being compatible with more than half my games. I tried getting the SiS AGP drivers, but it won't install, it has generic Windows one and when I try to update it, it can not find it.

Please help, as I miss my games and using the computer. I have found what could be the problem. The card reads 40°C idle, then after about 15min it jumps to 227°C. I doubt this is right, but what are the odds of 2 different cards having the exact same problem. By the way this has the G71 core and when I try to use the NVIDIA cotrol panel and go to performance stability, I get the artifacted screen then blank.

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO edition, what about some tweak? - 2008/01/26 09:20 Okay, never mind. Apparently this card is a piece of crap with even worse drivers. When I finally got a screen to show after the artifacts I had an NV4_disp error. As long as I install no drivers the card works fine. If anyone knows of any way to fix this, flash to a different manufacture or a driver that actually works let me know. I had to re-install Windows because I could barely get past the login screen without blue screen.

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO edition, what about some tweak? - 2008/02/02 13:23 Well yes if you have a GeForce 7800 GS with an AGP interface you will need a good power supply with a good 12V rail to give a constant current to the graphics card. And the 12V rail also depends a bit on how much otherhardware you are powering from the power supply in your system... So if it is a lot your 420W might not be sufficient?

Re:EVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO edition, what about some tweak? - 2008/03/13 06:04 Thanks. I ended up RMAing the card again, EVGA is so awesome they paid the shipping both ways. Got my new one and it works fine.
