GeForce 8800 GT, and some booting problem after restart? - 2007/12/31 00:56 Hi guys, I bought a brand new computer. At first everything was fine I've installed the required drivers and Windows XP and the computer was running smoothly. I was trying to transfer the data from my old computer to the new one via standard cable when all of a sudden the Windows on my new computer went dead so I had to reboot. After the reboot the picture quality became absolutely chatastrophic.

Typically after restart I would see a very messy picture on my computer the letters would be illegible so I wouldn't be even able to read the the letters when inside the boot menu... Windows occasionally can boot itself but I can only use it for a couple of minutes because after that the picture on the computer gets so bad that everything becomes illegible.

I switched my video card to an other one and than everything was working fine. So I assume that it must be the video card that's causing the trouble. But since it's not completely dead I was wondering wether there is any way to fix it? Or should I just go back and ask for a replacement? Also I am not sure wether a replacement wouldn't go wrong as well? Any idea?Any help is greatly appreciated!

System Specifications...
- Gigabyte GA X38-DQ6 Mainboard
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor
- Unknown 4GB DDR2 Dual Channel Memory
- Unknown GeForce 8800 GT Graphics Card
- Samsung 500GB SATA2 16MB Cache Disk
- Chieftech 500 Computer Case

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and some booting problem after restart? - 2007/12/31 09:45 Okay so you bought a new computer with that GeForce 8800 GT already in it? Cause if so then I would think it is not normal and it would seem a problem with the graphics card and the store you bought your PC should best replace it. It is very strange that at a reboot it would give a unreadable image and therefore indicate that something is wrong with the video card. I would suggest to check with the store and see if they can reproduce and fix it with a replacement GeForce 8800 GT graphics card.

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and some booting problem after restart? - 2007/12/31 13:34 Well I bought it through a wholesaler who is a friend of mine. I told him what I wanted and he built it for me. Of course every part of my PC has guarantee for 2 years at least, so asking for a replacement shouldn't be a problem. And by the way it is a Gigabyte GeForce card. What I am afraid of is that something had been setup incorrectly in my computer and that's what killed my video card so even if I would get a replacement it would go dead again.

I remember he mentioned it to me that he had difficulty setting up my motherboard at first. It wouldn't start so he had to dismantle it and than had to put it together again. I've also removed all of the parts piece by piece to pinpoint the problem but replacing the video card with an other one clearly showed that it's the video card that's causing the trouble...

I've also read that in some cases the power supply wasn't sufficient for the video card. I spent quite a lot of money on a good power supply but perhaps it is still not good enough? It is a Chieftech 500W power supply I bought it for around €70. I was also wondering that if I upgraded the BIOS on my video card than would it solve the problem? Should I try It? And thank you very much for your help!

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and some booting problem after restart? - 2007/12/31 13:59 Mmm, it is not because your friend had a problem and has to start again that is was the same issue cause building a PC you can always put something not so good so that you better check it all again or restart. Now since you are certain that it is the graphics card, I would just go for the replacement and see I that fixes the issue. Flashing the BIOS won't do much cause the the newer version shoudl not make much difference. But by all means if you can make a backup and attach it, we can have a look at it.
