Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2007/12/28 16:20 Glad that I saw this thread. I have a similar problem with MSI GeForce 8800 GT, system won't boot with this card. The Card is the OC edition from MSI running on an MSI K8N SLI Platinum mainboard and a Tagan 480W power supply. This card works fine with my friend's mainboard, an DFI LANParty UT nF4 Ultra-D. MSI support asked me to flash the graphics card BIOS using that system. However, the Live Update utility from MSI causes blue screen of death on launch. After reading this thread, seems like I wouldn't have to return the card. Do I have to provide my current BIOS for updating or is it available?

Well, I have a Corsair 620W power supply. It would be strange if it couldn't deliver sufficient power to the card, but as I said it only goes black when starting a game or movie.
Okay, so that can't be the problem as the Corsair power supplies are quite good and powerful, so it must be something else. Well what you can always try is the EVGA or ASUS Gen1 BIOS that is available on this thread and flash your Gainward card with one of those BIOS's. Both are downgrading the cards for better PCI Express 1.x support. Just try and see if it makes any difference, and let us know the outcome.

Well the best is to always to make a backup of the original BIOS first, before attempting any flashing. So can you do that and also provide us the original BIOS? We will check it then but most likely you will need to flash with the Gen1 BIOS from ASUS or EVGA to get your card working with your system.

Alright, just that will have to wait for 3-4 more days since my friend is out of town for the new year. In the meantime I have asked MSI support to email me the new BIOS since Live Update fails to launch. Maybe you can have a look at that BIOS instead. Thanks a lot.

Okay, yeps when you get that BIOS we can have a look and check it out. But the Live Update of MSI is not ideal and is giving a lot of issues and also some bad updates. I don't really see why MSI is still sticking with that...

Right, I have never flashed my motherboard using Live Update. The good old Ms-DOS based flash has always worked for me. Take care...

Re:GeForce 8800 GT, and any ways to edit out PCI Express 2.0!? - 2007/12/29 12:50 I've read this thread and I'm trying to flash an XFX GeForce 8800 GT 256MB Alpha Dog card so it can be used in my friend's ASRock Dual-VSTA board. I've got a bootable flash disk with nvFlash and I've already backed up the existing BIOS with NiBiTor. I can't do the Gen1 change using NiBiTor as it seems to be one of the newer versions of the BIOS which doesn't support it.

I can't find a 256MB version of the BIOS for any manufacturer in this thread or the downloads section. I tried the ASUS 512MB version just in case the memory didn't make a difference but it corrupted the graphics. I restored the backup and am back at square one. Does anyone have a GeForce 8800 GT 256MB BIOS or know where I can find one with the Gen1 function?

Well just so you know we haven't see one yet, so the best way is to contact XFX support and ask for a working BIOS that offers the PCI Express 1.x compatibility. And if we find a 256MB version of the GeForce 8800 GT which is a Gen1 we will let you know... But we are not positive on that as NVIDIA is fully pointing the blame and shame to the mainboard manufacturers that should fix it with a BIOS upgrade for their mainboards.

Okay, this is done, waiting on their reply.

31/12/07 - somebody added this to my original post:

And I hope they will come up with the new BIOS that does have the Gen1 enabled so that I can use that graphics card.

Nice, thanks for that and keep us posted. We have tried with NVIDIA ourselves but that doesn't work so I am just hoping that if more brands are getting complains that finally NVIDIA will change its mind and do somethhing themselves about this...
