GeForce 6150 SE, slower than older GeForce FX5200 card? - 2007/12/28 07:10 I need a bit of help about choosing. Sorry if it is a really obvious choice to you, kind of like choosing between a Toyota and a Porsche but I have no idea which one is better and why... Could any one help me out? It is mainly for running Windows Vista, not too graphically intensive games and regular stuff like going on the web, etc. I had a computer with the GeForce FX5200 on it and I ran Counter-Strike: Source at about 130 fps on a specific part of a specific map.

Today, I bought myself a new computer that had this GeForce 6150 SE on it, but on the very same part of the very same map, I only hit about 35 fps... So I'm asking myself is it the GeForce FX5200 better than the GeForce 6150 SE? Or maybe I should check my GeForce 6150 SE's drivers? Also, if there are any gamers, how can I tweak my graphical settings on Counter-Strike: Source without loosing much quality so that my frame rates are even better? I heard about water reflections and smoother shadows but I'm not sure and I don't want to screw up with anything so I need your advice... Thanks a lot!

Re:GeForce 6150 SE, slower than older GeForce FX5200 card? - 2007/12/28 09:05 Well it could indeed be that the GeForce 6150 SE is slower than your older GeForce FX5200, but the main difference is that that you can now enjoy Shader Model 3.0, instead of only Shader Model 2.1 with the older card. But from the real power items that make the card run good frame rates the GeForce FX5200 has somehow the edge. And as you have seen the GeForce 6150 SE is not really performing that great which is normal for an integrated graphics card.

Re:GeForce 6150 SE, slower than older GeForce FX5200 card? - 2007/12/28 10:02 Alright thanks a lot for taking you time to reply to me, especially in such a short amount of time. I'll try switching back my new computers graphics card to the GeForce FX5200 tomorrow and see how it does... Or is there a way I could possibly use both? No idea how I'm just suggesting, I have close to zero knowledge about this but I can learn pretty quick.

Re:GeForce 6150 SE, slower than older GeForce FX5200 card? - 2007/12/28 18:33 Actually, I've changed my mind and I plan on buying myself a new graphics card for about Canadian $100, can be stretched a bit but not much over $140. What would you think would be good for me? I checked my slots and I need to buy a PCI Express compatible card.

Re:GeForce 6150 SE, slower than older GeForce FX5200 card? - 2007/12/28 18:48 Well I would say to try and get something in the GeForce 8 series, like the GeForce 8500 GT? I don't know how much that will cost in Canada but I somehow think it will fall in your budget. And I think it will show a nice boosts and does support DirectX 10. If you can find a GeForce 8600 GT that would fall in your budget please go for that one.

Re:GeForce 6150 SE, slower than older GeForce FX5200 card? - 2007/12/28 22:21 Well I had posted this on an other site aswell and they recommended to me the GeForce 8500 GT or GeForce 8600 GT if I can afford too so I'll go with that... I checked on a well known electronics store in Canada, kinda like BestBuyand the GeForce 8600 GT is about $208 while the GeForce 8500 GT is around $149, so I'll go with the GeForce 8500 GT.

I also found this EVGA e-GeForce 8500 GT on the same site and I'm wondering why is it only around $129? It says e-GeForce 8500 GT instead of simply GeForce but does that change anything? Thanks again. I would check other stores as well but I'm just trying to set my mind on a specific model before I try to find the lowest price available for it...

Re:GeForce 6150 SE, slower than older GeForce FX5200 card? - 2007/12/28 22:38 Well it doesn't matter which GeForce 8500 GT, as long as it is one. The last one you mention is just how EVGA is naming their products and they name em e-GeForce referring to EVGA. So nothing more nothing less then a product name but still a GeForce 8500 GT just like the BFG one. So in that case you would just pay more for the same, so I would suggest to go for EVGA which a very well know brand with excellent support.
