BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB, not work after a few days? - 2007/12/10 11:47 Hi, I need a little help and this forum comes with a sterling reputation. I have bought a GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB on release day, and got a friend to put it into my rig on the 12th November, along with an OCZ 600W power supply and a new AMD Athlon X2 5000+ black edition CPU with Zalman cooler. Worked fine for a few days, then whilst using word processor the screen went black and said no signal. After closing down via the power button and re-booting, the card would spin at 100% fan speed but no display would be sent to the monitor.

After numerous re-seatings and re-connectings of the card, it'd work again fine for a few days. Then the same problem, it was kind of random when and how it happenend, and a lottery regards getting it back working. Anyway, it did this again on Friday, and I haven't been able to get it working again, so here I am. I don't think is mainboard incompatibility that some users have experienced as I've had it working, running games etc. Any help and/or ideas?

Well just wondering as that looks like a nice system you have there, which mainboard are you using? I know what you are saying that it isn't PCI Express incompatibility, but still knowing what mainboard you got might help us a bit further. Cause you never know that it is the PCI Express slot of the mainboard that is acting up and we rather check what we are dealing with.

Re:BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB, not work after a few days? - 2007/12/10 21:47 I'm running an MSI K9NGM2 mainboard, which was switched at the time of install with a previous ASUS M2V that was giving error beeps due to incompatibility with the GeForce 8800 GT.

Okay, thanks. Just for info the incompatibility issue is not only indicated with error beeps, but for most users it is just show with a blank screen and some are facing only after their PC was used for some hours. But okay, I would find it strange that the nForce 430 chipset would not be fully PCI Express okay, but still in your case I would have gone for a newer mainboard as this one is only listed in the archives at MSI at this moment. Now just to be sure the BFG card works fine in another PC?

Re:BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB, not work after a few days? - 2007/12/10 23:33 Unfortunately I don't have the ability to test it in a seperate PC, the card has been working in mine, but after being off for a few hours, sometimes on cold boot the card would spin at 100% fan and not display anything to the monitor. On Friday I was on Internet Explorer and the screen went black with no signal after which I have been unable to boot, with the problem I just mentioned. And it definitely isn't heat damage as I used RivaTuner to run the fan at 45% constant, 75% in games and the temps of the grapjhics card never went over 57°C.

Well that is what some others are also experiencing and that is why I mentioned it might either be the PCI Express issue, even with your new mainboard having the nForce 430 chipset or just something with the mainboard's PCI Express slot. So really you have two options, you try the card in another PC like from a friend to confirm the card is working fine or you flash the card with the Gen1 BIOS of ASUS or EVGA to see if that makes a difference.

Re:BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB, not work after a few days? - 2007/12/11 13:28 As I don't have another PC to flash the card, I'm going to RMA it today to BFG, it will cost me only the price of shipping and they will test any replacement, thus ruling out the faulty card. If it comes back and boots, I'm happy as larry, if it doesn't, it's back to square one but with one less issue to consider.

Well that sounds a bit strange you know nobody with a PC that you could just visit to try it out or even go to a shop to try it out on another PC? I don't think anything is wrong with the card itself but that it just need the Gen1 BIOS...

Re:BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB, not work after a few days? - 2007/12/11 19:45 I'm 99% sure it isn't a BIOS conflict mate, as when my mate built the PC, and booted it was fine. And the card's been working for 3 weeks or so perfectly, it's just recently done this. And lots of people on the overclockers forums are experiencing the same problems apparently.

Re:BFG GeForce 8800 GT OC 512MB, not work after a few days? - 2007/12/31 12:53 Then you RMA the card and ask for a replacement as then the card is just faulty. But for me it does sound very strange as I have now been working for several weeks with a Gainward GeForce 8800 GT and also running overclocked without any issues. But it can be as also Zotac had a bad batch of GeForce 8800 GT's that started failing after a week or two...
