Gigabyte GeForce 8600 GT faulty, doesn't boot anymore?! - 2007/11/19 03:53 Hey guys... I read through another hardware forums and saw that this forum was highly recommended for its help. Basically, I just recently purchased a Gigabyte GeForce 8600 GT 512MB DDR2 card. I was wrapped to put it in and finally play games without any problems... My previous card appeared to be faulty, it came with the system and was an ATI Radeon X600 256MB PCI Express. It overheats bad and requires that I have a fan directly on it to not hang during games and the performance is choppy. I would get artifacts on the screen and then a your video card is not responding message or a VPU recovery error.

Anyway, so I put in the new card, install the new drivers, no dramas so far. Never Winter Nights 2 came with the card, much to my joy, I love the series. So I installed it. I did some reading online and having only 1GB of ram, decided I should investigate to see what kind of memory I need and can use with my motherboard, so I downloaded PC Wizard 2008 and checked. Anyway, so I restart my computer for about the 3rd or 4th time having put in the new card, and bam, no video output. The monitor is not responding to the video card and there's just plain, no display. I restarted many times, still no response.

I took it out, put it back in...no work. Put in the old card, I get a display, but am met with a blue screen of death. I restart and it appears to work with my old video card hence me typing this message now. Note, I did remove all drivers before installing new GeForce 8600 GT ones. t's a black screen from the start. No video whatsoever whilst the new card is in. However, what was strange is that I could boot it a few times and it would work fine...

Ugh anybody have any idea what to do? Would it be the card or is my system out of date? I bought it about 2 nearly 3 years ago... I'm contemplating just buying a new motherboard if it would solve the problem. Cheers guys, this is extremely frustrating... Thanks!

- Intel Pentium 4 540J at 3.2GHz Processor

Re:Gigabyte GeForce 8600 GT faulty, doesn't boot anymore?! - 2007/11/19 20:06 Okay, that seems a bit strange that just by rebooting it wouldn't work anymore. But okay, you never know. So what you should try is visiting a friend to try the GeForce 8600 GT on his/her PC and see what it gives. This would be to determine if your system is the cause or that the card is really gone bad and then you can just bring it back and ask fo a replacement...

Re:Gigabyte GeForce 8600 GT faulty, doesn't boot anymore?! - 2007/11/20 06:37 Alright, thanks! Difficult thing however is that not many of my friends have desktop computers. Laptops seem to be the thing in my circle...

Well it is your only option to confirm if something is wrong with the card or something else. So I would just see to find a friend who can help out. If else just return it as not working to your shop and ask a replacement.

Well we can only help once the problem is identified so in your case it can be a problem of the mainboard, or really that your video card just went bad after some reboots. That would be strange but we are still talking about computer hardware and it is somehow still a bit unpredictable in certain cases...

Re:Gigabyte GeForce 8600 GT faulty, doesn't boot anymore?! - 2007/11/23 10:52 Tested in a friends computer, works fine... I have also just recently purchased a 600W power supply to see if that will make a difference, however I'm having some difficulty figuring out how to install it... Fixed! Computer running a billion times faster now, it was a power supply problem. Thanks for your help Mavke!

Excellent, so as mentioned having it tested on an other PC showed that it was not the graphics card but indeed a good power supply is needed for all newer graphics card. And by that we mean a good brand and at least a 500W with a good stable voltage and decent Amps on the 12V rails. Good to see it is fixed and you got now a decent power supply.
